Chapter 11 - The Ghost of the Syndicate

The applause from the Beverly Hilton had barely faded into the crisp night air when the first crack appeared in my newly forged armor.
Inside the private holding room behind the main stage, away from the flashing cameras and cheering investors, Marcus stood waiting with a secure satellite tablet. His jaw was set so tight the muscles in his cheek twitched.
"Ma'am, we have a breach," he said quietly, stepping in front of the door and locking it. "Not at the estate. At the Federal Corrections Complex in Florence, Colorado."
I smoothed the front of my emerald gown, my blood running cold despite the warm room. "Julian Sterling?"
"Dead," Marcus replied smoothly, turning the tablet toward me. "Heart failure, officially. But our contact inside the infirmary says his lips were blue before the alarms even went off. Potassium chloride injection through his IV line. Someone silenced him before he could sign the asset transfer documents for the Sterling Global subsidiaries in East Asia."
I stared at the high-resolution photo on the screen. Julian Sterling, the ruthless mastermind who had terrorized my family for decades, looked pitifully small under the harsh fluorescent lights of a prison morgue. But his death wasn't a victory—it was a message.
"Who had access to his medical bay?" I asked, my voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
"That's the problem," Marcus said, scrolling to a encrypted security log. "The video feed for that wing went dark for three minutes at 8:15 PM. The same time you stepped onto the stage tonight. The signature on the override command came from an internal Vanguard-Sterling IP address."
A sharp chill traveled down my spine. The takeover of Sterling Global hadn't cleared out the rats; it had brought them inside my own walls. By merging the two conglomerates, I had given Julian's underground network direct access to Vanguard's intranet.
"What about Damian?" I demanded.
"Damian is still locked in the psychiatric wing at ADX Florence under heavy sedation," Marcus confirmed. "He's useless to them now. But the East Asian assets... Victoria, those holding companies control eighty percent of the rare-earth metals required to manufacture our defense AI processors. If we lose those subsidiaries, Vanguard-Sterling's supply chain grands to a total halt within thirty days."
My phone chimed in my clutch. It wasn't a standard call or a text. The screen flickered black, replacing my wallpaper with a stylized crimson lotus logo—the symbol of the Hong Kong-based Chen Syndicate, the primary financial backers behind Julian's black-market weapons deals.
I swiped the screen to answer, placing the phone to my ear.
"Mrs. Vanguard," a voice purred through the speaker. It was a woman's voice, smooth as spun silk, carrying a distinct British-Cantonese accent. "Or should I call you Miss Sterling? Your performance on television was truly captivating. My board was almost moved to tears."
"Who is this?" I asked, signaling Marcus to trace the signal.
"I am Madam Chen," she replied with a soft, melodious laugh. "Your late uncle Julian owed my family three billion dollars in defaulted sovereign loans. Now that you have so generously absorbed his assets, his debts belong to you. We have taken the liberty of freezing the Singapore and Shanghai refineries until payment is settled in full."
"Julian's debts died with him in his cell," I said coldly.
"Is that how Western law works?" Madam Chen chuckled, her tone darkening instantly into pure malice. "In our world, blood pays for blood, and blood pays for gold. You have seven days to deliver the master source code for the Vanguard AI to our facility in Macau, or we will systematically dismantle every offshore refinery you own. And Victoria... do give my warm regards to little Alexander and Eleanor."
The call disconnected before Marcus could pinpoint the relay server.

I looked up at Marcus, my fists clenching until my nails bit into my palms. They thought they could use my children to intimidate me again. They thought because Julian was dead, I was an easy target for a foreign syndicate.
"Assemble the executive security council," I commanded, stepping past him toward the private exit. "We're taking a flight to Singapore tonight."
