Chapter 9

Chapter 9: The Ghost in the Machine
The Swiss Alps were breathtaking, but neither Daniel nor Laura was appreciating the scenery. Clad in winter tactical gear provided by a sympathetic contact in the international intelligence community, they crouched on a snow-covered ridge overlooking a massive, brutalist concrete fortress built into the side of a mountain.
Through her high-powered binoculars, Laura scanned the perimeter. "We’ve got automated security cameras, motion sensors, and at least a dozen heavily armed private guards. Entering through the front door is suicide."
"Then it’s a good thing Chen gave us a backdoor," Daniel said, tapping a small, specialized device attached to his wrist console.
Back in Boston, Agent Chen had managed to tap into the fortress’s localized network by exploiting a vulnerability in the Geneva satellite array. With a single keystroke from thousands of miles away, Chen looped the security camera feeds for exactly ten minutes.
"Go," Laura whispered.
They slipped down the ridge, moving like ghosts through the shadows. They breached the outer perimeter wall through a ventilation shaft, sliding down into the lower levels of the facility. The air inside was cold and sterile, smelling of ozone and server cooling fluid.
As they navigated the labyrinthine corridors, the sound of a raised voice echoed from a room ahead. They crept closer, pressing their backs against the steel wall.
Inside a laboratory filled with advanced medical and computer equipment, Nathan was strapped to a chair, an array of biometric sensors attached to his temples and wrists. Standing before him was Julian Vance—a tall, aristocratic man with silver hair and a meticulously tailored suit that looked wildly out of place in a mountain bunker.
"You're fighting a losing battle, Nathan," Vance said smoothly, looking at a monitor that displayed Nathan’s fluctuating neural patterns. "The biometric lock on your quantum code requires a stable, conscious baseline to authenticate the transfer. We can do this the easy way, where you walk out of here alive, or we can use neuro-inhibitors to forcefully extract the sequence. The latter will leave you a vegetable, but it makes no difference to me."
Nathan spat blood onto the floor, glaring up at the tycoon. "You won't get the code, Vance. The moment you try to upload it to your satellites, the failsafe will trigger. It will wipe your entire network."
"Ah, the failsafe," Vance smiled coldly. "A brilliant design. But that’s why we have your son’s genetic data. We’ve already synthesized a patch using the DNA profile Victor Hale acquired before his arrest. Your child’s blood is the key that unlocks your failsafe."
Daniel’s grip on his weapon tightened. He looked at Laura, who gave a sharp nod.
They burst into the room, weapons raised. "Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" Daniel shouted.
May you like
Vance’s guards reacted instantly. A chaotic firefight erupted in the enclosed space. Daniel dove behind a server rack, firing precisely and neutralizing two guards. Laura pushed forward, her weapon tracking Vance, but the billionaire had already stepped backward through a heavy, reinforced glass partition, hitting a lockdown button.
"Kill them," Vance ordered through an intercom as more guards flooded into the room from the far exit.
