Chapter 1

"A Pregnant Woman Was Beaten In Broad Daylight—Then One Phone Call Exposed A Billion-Dollar Conspiracy

"She's losing consciousness!"
The words echoed through the mall corridor.
Officer Daniel Torres dropped beside Emily's motionless body and immediately pressed two fingers against her neck.
Pulse.
Weak.
But there.
Thank God.
"Ambulance is two minutes out!" a security guard shouted.
Two minutes.
Daniel looked down at the blood spreading across the white tile floor.
Two minutes suddenly felt like forever.
Emily's face had turned pale.
Far too pale.
Her breathing came in shallow, uneven gasps.
One trembling hand remained wrapped around her stomach.
Even unconscious, she was trying to protect her baby.
Around them, chaos erupted.
Shoppers cried.
Employees rushed forward with towels.
Mall security pushed people back.
Several witnesses pointed toward Marcus Kane.
The man who had caused all of this.
Marcus stood frozen twenty feet away.
For the first time since arriving, Daniel got a good look at him.
And what he saw surprised him.
Marcus didn't look angry anymore.
He looked terrified.
Not afraid of being arrested.
Afraid of something else.
Something much bigger.
The realization stayed with Daniel.
Because violent men usually reacted one of two ways after an attack.
Rage.
Or denial.
Marcus showed neither.
Instead, he stared at Emily's stomach.
Like it contained a secret.
Like it contained evidence.
Like it contained something he desperately needed destroyed.
The thought made Daniel's skin crawl.
Sirens echoed outside.
The ambulance had arrived.
Paramedics burst through the mall entrance carrying emergency equipment.
Within seconds they were surrounding Emily.
One medic checked her pulse.
Another attached monitors.
A third assessed the pregnancy.
Then the lead paramedic looked up.
His expression immediately darkened.
Daniel recognized that look.
Bad news.
Very bad news.
"What's wrong?"
The medic swallowed.
"There may be placental separation."
Daniel's stomach dropped.
Even without medical training, he knew enough.
The baby was in danger.
Serious danger.
The paramedics loaded Emily onto a stretcher.
As they rushed toward the exit, Daniel caught a glimpse of her face.
Blood covered one side of her forehead.
Bruises were already forming.
Yet somehow she looked younger.
Fragile.
Almost childlike.
A woman who had walked into the mall that morning expecting an ordinary day.
A woman now fighting for two lives.
Then Daniel stood.
And turned toward Marcus.
The billionaire's son didn't resist.
Didn't run.
Didn't argue.
He simply extended his wrists.
Almost as though he expected this moment.
Almost as though he knew it had been coming.
Daniel snapped handcuffs into place.
"Marcus Kane, you're under arrest for aggravated assault."
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel led him toward a police vehicle.
Halfway there, Marcus finally spoke.
His voice was barely audible.
"Is the baby alive?"
Daniel stared at him.
Of all the questions he expected...
That wasn't one of them.
"You don't get to ask that."
Marcus lowered his head.
Silence followed.
Then he whispered:
"You don't understand."
Daniel's patience vanished.
"No."
He opened the patrol car door.
"I understand perfectly."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"The baby isn't mine."
Daniel froze.
For a second, he thought he misheard.
"What?"
Marcus looked up.
Pure panic filled his eyes.
"The baby isn't mine."
The statement landed like a bomb.
Daniel stared.
Trying to process it.
Emily had publicly named Marcus as the father.
Court records confirmed it.
The entire city believed it.
So why would Marcus suddenly claim otherwise?
Then another possibility emerged.
A lie.
A desperate lie.
A last-minute attempt to avoid responsibility.
Daniel almost dismissed it immediately.
Almost.
Except Marcus looked genuinely terrified.
May you like
And terrified people often told the truth by accident.
Hours later, inside St. Matthew's Medical Center, surgeons fought to save both mother and child.
