Zero nine

Chapter 2

Part 2:
The waiting room felt colder than winter.

Emily's older sister, Rachel, sat alone near the operating suite.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

Her hands shook continuously.

Every time the operating room doors opened, she jumped.

Every time they closed again, her hope faded.

Finally, after nearly three hours, a surgeon emerged.

The waiting room stood.

Every person.

Every family member.

Every nurse nearby.

Rachel rushed forward.

"Please."

The surgeon removed his surgical cap.

And smiled.

A tired smile.

But a smile.

"Your sister is alive."

Rachel nearly collapsed from relief.

The surgeon continued.

"And so is the baby."

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

Thank God.

Thank God.

Thank God.

Then the doctor's expression shifted.

Rachel's relief evaporated instantly.

Because doctors only made that expression when another problem remained.

"What is it?"

The surgeon hesitated.

Then answered.

"There's something unusual."

Rachel's stomach tightened.

"What?"

The surgeon held up a medical chart.

"We ran additional tests during surgery."

Silence.

Then:

"The baby's blood type doesn't match Marcus Kane."

The room froze.

Rachel stared.

Unable to speak.

Unable to move.

Unable to breathe.

The doctor continued carefully.

"We repeated the test twice."

Silence.

"The probability of paternity is effectively zero."

Rachel felt dizzy.

No.

Impossible.

Marcus was the father.

Emily said so.

Everyone knew it.

Didn't they?

The surgeon looked uncomfortable.

"Your sister may have important information we don't know."

Rachel sat down slowly.

Because suddenly everything had changed.

Everything.

The assault.

The pregnancy.

The fear.

The obsession.

None of it made sense anymore.

Meanwhile, three floors below, Marcus sat inside an interrogation room.

Steel table.

Concrete walls.

Bright lights.

No escape.

Detective Laura Bennett entered carrying a thick file.

She placed it on the table.

Then sat down.

For several moments neither spoke.

Finally Laura opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Financial records.

Phone logs.

Court documents.

Enough evidence to bury Marcus for years.

Yet she ignored all of it.

Instead she asked one question.

"The baby."

Marcus immediately looked up.

Laura noticed.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

"What about it?"

Marcus swallowed.

Then made a decision.

A dangerous decision.

The kind that changes everything.

He leaned forward.

And whispered:

"Look at the DNA report from six months ago."

Laura frowned.

"What DNA report?"

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"The one Emily never showed anyone."

A chill ran through the room.

Laura slowly closed the file.

Now she had his full attention.

"Explain."

Marcus looked exhausted.

Broken.

Terrified.

"The baby isn't mine."

Silence.

Laura waited.

Marcus continued.

"The father is Nathan Holloway."

The name meant nothing to her.

At first.

Then recognition hit.

Nathan Holloway.

Tech entrepreneur.

Multi-millionaire.

Missing person.

Officially declared dead eight months earlier after his private helicopter vanished during a storm.

Laura stared.

Because suddenly a horrifying possibility appeared.

A dead billionaire.

A hidden pregnancy.

A violent assault.

Secret DNA tests.

Nothing about this was random.

Nothing.

Marcus looked directly into her eyes.

Then delivered the sentence that made her blood run cold.

"Nathan isn't dead."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Laura's pulse accelerated.

"What?"

Marcus nodded.

Fear visible in every movement.

"That's what Emily discovered."

"No."

Laura shook her head.

"The wreckage was found."

"Exactly."

Marcus's voice dropped.

"Only the wreckage."

The room became very quiet.

Because now the pieces were beginning to fit together.

A fake death.

A missing billionaire.

A pregnant woman carrying his child.

And someone desperate enough to kill to keep the truth buried.

Marcus looked toward the one-way mirror.

Then back toward Laura.

His next words came out barely above a whisper.

"They're going to come for her."

Laura frowned.

"They?"

Marcus's face lost all color.

"The people who made Nathan disappear."

The interrogation room suddenly felt smaller.

Much smaller.

Because if Marcus was telling the truth...

Then Emily wasn't attacked because of a relationship.

She was attacked because she carried evidence.

Living evidence.

Evidence worth killing for.

At that exact moment, upstairs in the intensive care unit, Emily's eyes slowly opened.

Machines beeped softly around her.

Pain consumed her body.

Her head throbbed.

Her stomach ached.

But she was alive.

Her baby was alive.

A nurse immediately noticed.

"Emily?"

Emily blinked weakly.

The nurse smiled.

"You're safe."

Emily tried to speak.

Failed.

Then tried again.

This time one word emerged.

Hoarse.

Broken.

Urgent.

"Nathan."

The nurse froze.

Emily grabbed her wrist with surprising strength.

Tears filled her eyes.

Then she whispered the words that would change the entire investigation.

"Nathan called me."

Silence.

The nurse stared.

Emily's voice trembled.

"Yesterday."

The room went cold.

May you like

Because Nathan Holloway had been officially dead for eight months.

And yet somehow...He had called her less than twenty-four hours before the attack.
