Chapter 8

Chapter 8: The Geneva Equation
By the time Laura and Daniel breached the front gates, the tactical teams were already sweeping the property. The house was a war zone. Spent shell casings littered the pristine marble floors, and the smell of gunpowder hung heavy in the air.
Daniel ran straight upstairs, his heart in his throat. "Emily! Nathan!"
He found Emily emerging from the hidden panel of the panic room, clutching Hope tightly to her chest. She was trembling, looking around the ruined bedroom in despair.
"They took him," she whispered, her voice cracking as tears ran down her face. "Daniel, they took Nathan. I heard them talking right before the police arrived. They said they didn't need the baby if they had him."
Laura walked into the room, her expression grim. She held up a small, black electronic device she had found on the balcony. It was an encrypted military transponder, left behind in the crew's hasty retreat.
"We aren't going to lose him, Emily," Laura said with fierce determination. "Not this time."
They brought Emily and Hope to a secure, undisclosed safe house guarded by federal agents. Meanwhile, Laura, Daniel, and Special Agent Chen locked themselves in the command center, working through the night to decrypt the captured transponder.
By 4:00 AM, Chen broke through the encryption. "I’ve got a signal. The transponder synced with a private satellite network owned by a shell company registered in Geneva, Switzerland. The Meridian Group isn't just an organization; it’s an international tech syndicate led by a man named Julian Vance."
"Julian Vance?" Laura repeated, her eyes narrowing. "The former Undersecretary of Defense?"
"The very same," Chen said, pulling up a dossier. "He retired five years ago to start a private intelligence firm. He’s been using stolen proprietary tech to build an untraceable global surveillance apparatus. He needs Nathan’s quantum architecture to launch the final satellite array, which would give him access to every classified database on earth."
"Where are they taking Nathan?" Daniel asked, leaning over the console.
"The satellite tracking shows a private cargo plane took off from a secluded airfield outside Boston twenty minutes ago," Chen reported, tracking a glowing dot moving northeast. "Flight plan lists a private airfield in Nova Scotia, Canada. But that's a decoy. Based on the fuel trajectory, they are heading across the Atlantic. Their destination is a fortified estate in the Swiss Alps. Vance’s personal stronghold."
Daniel looked at Laura. "We don't have jurisdiction in Switzerland, and a diplomatic request for a raid will take weeks. By then, Nathan will be dead, and Vance will have what he wants."

Laura slowly took off her police badge, placing it on the table. "Who said anything about jurisdiction? I'm taking a leave of absence."
Daniel smiled, a cold, dangerous glint in his eye. He unclipped his own badge and laid it next to hers. "I’ve always wanted to see the Alps."
