Chapter 7 - THE FALL OF THE VANCE DYNASTY

The sky over the suburban estate had turned a dark, bruised violet as storm clouds gathered on the horizon. Rain began to fall in heavy, deliberate drops, slicking the wide stone driveway where generations of the Vance family had flaunted their unearned luxury.
When my black SUV pulled through the iron gates, the scene looked like an apocalypse of wealth.
Bright yellow law enforcement tape crisscrossed the grand stone pillars. Two moving trucks hired by the court-appointed receiver were parked near the entrance, as workers systematically tagged and loaded antique furniture, oil paintings, and crystal chandeliers into the back.
Eleanor Vance stood in the middle of the courtyard, soaked by the rain, her expensive hair ruin, wildly waving her arms at the federal marshals.
"You can't take that table! That's an eighteenth-century French antique!" she shrieked, her voice raspy and broken. "My father-in-law bought that in Paris! This is harassment! Where is my lawyer?!"
"Your lawyer was arrested two hours ago, Eleanor," I said, stepping out of the SUV under a large black umbrella held by my security guard.
Eleanor whipped around, her eyes bloodshot, her face gaunt with sudden age. The arrogant, cruel woman who had dumped a bucket of ice water over my feverish head two days ago was gone. In her place stood a desperate, broken beggar.
"Genevieve..." Eleanor gasped, taking a stumbling step toward me before the marshals intercepted her. "Genevieve, please! You have to stop this! They’re taking everything! They’re taking my home!"
"It was never your home, Eleanor," I said, stopping a few feet away from her, watching the rain drip off the hem of my coat. "It was built on stolen land, maintained by stolen money, and preserved through cruelty. The debt is due."
"We are family!" Eleanor wept, throwing her hands up in desperation. "You were married to my son! How can you be so cold? Have you no mercy?"
"Mercy?" I laughed, a sharp, humorless sound that cut through the thunder rolling above us. "Did you show me mercy when I was shivering with a 104-degree fever? Did you show me mercy when you threw ice water on my face and demanded I cook for forty people? Did you show me mercy when you laced my tea with sedatives to make me look insane?"
Eleanor dropped to her knees in the mud, clutching her hands together in front of her chest. "It was Julian! Julian insisted we do it! He said we had no choice! Please, save the house! I’ll give you whatever you want!"
"It’s too late, Eleanor," I said coldly. "The court auction starts in three weeks. The land, the house, and every asset down to the clothes in your closet are being liquidated to pay back the Sterling Estate."
Just then, the front doors of the mansion burst open. Julian came staggering out, carrying two heavy duffel bags stuffed with cash and designer watches he had tried to clear from the master safe.
"Get out of my way!" Julian screamed at the marshals guarding the steps.
When his eyes landed on me standing in the driveway, he froze. His clothes were soaked, his hair plastered to his forehead, his eyes wild with a mixture of terror and unbridled rage. He dropped the duffel bags onto the wet cobblestones and marched toward me.
"You ruined us!" Julian roared, his face contorting into a terrifying mask. "You worthless, ungrateful bitch! I gave you my name! I made you somebody! And you destroyed my entire life for a bunch of old papers?!"
He raised his arm to strike me.
Before his fist could even drop, my security officer stepped forward, grabbing Julian's forearm in mid-air and twisting it violently behind his back. Julian let out a agonizing scream, dropping to his knees in the mud beside his mother.
"Attempted assault on a federal witness," the marshal announced, stepping in and pressing Julian’s face firmly against the wet concrete, snapping handcuffs onto his wrists. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest."
Julian struggled against the cuffs, coughing up muddy water, glaring up at me with pure hatred. "You think you won, Genevieve?! You think your father gives a damn about you?! He left you for twenty years! You're just as alone as you were before!"
I leaned down until I was level with his muddy, tear-streaked face.
"I am not alone, Julian," I whispered softly, making sure every word sank deep into his soul. "I have my name back. I have my mother's memory cleared. And I have every single penny your family tried to steal from me."
I stood up straight, turning my back on the pathetic sight of mother and son kneeling together in the rain, surrounded by police lights and seizure notices.
Victoria rushed out of the side door carrying a small hand bag, but was instantly stopped by officers who began searching her belongings. The Vance empire hadn't just fallen—it had been completely erased.
As I stepped back into the warm, quiet interior of the SUV, my father looked at me from the back seat, offering a gentle, proud nod.

"It's over, Genevieve," he said softly.
"Not quite," I replied, looking out the window as the gates of the Vance estate closed behind us for the last time. "There's still one final place we need to go."
