Chapter 2 - THE AMBUSH AT DAWN

The fluorescent light in my hospital room flickered like a warning sign. Through the crack in the heavy door, I listened to Julian’s hushed, hurried voice echoing down the corridor. He was pacing back and forth, his expensive dress shoes squeaking rhythmically against the linoleum floor.
"I don't care about the regulations, Chloe!" Julian hissed into his phone, his voice laced with panic and venom. "She’s slipping through our fingers. Her mind is completely gone—she's hallucinating about spiders! If we don't transfer her to the private facility in Jersey by tomorrow morning, the doctors here are going to start asking questions about her blood work. Do you have the transport team ready or not?"
I remained motionless under the thin hospital sheet, holding my breath. My fingers tightened around the recording device cleverly disguised as an asthma inhaler that Raymond had left on my bedside table. Every single word was being saved onto a encrypted server.
After a brief pause, Julian spoke again, his tone dropping an octave into something cold and calculating. "The land agreement expires in three weeks. Once she's admitted into the sanitarium under full sedation, I’ll have legal guardianship. We wipe her out financially, sign the property transfer to clear my family's debt, and you get your thirty percent cut from the design firm's assets. Just make sure the drivers know to act like medical escorts. No mistakes."
He hung up. A few seconds later, I heard his footsteps fade down the hallway toward the elevator.
I sat up instantly, throwing off the blanket. The fever was gone, replaced by an icy surge of adrenaline that made my veins hum. I reached for my phone, which had been hidden beneath my mattress, and dialed Raymond immediately.
"He bit the hook," I said, my voice sharp and steady. "They’re planning a forced abduction tomorrow night to transfer me to an unaccredited private facility in New Jersey."
"Good," Raymond replied, his voice calm and methodical over the speaker. "Let them attempt it. Attempted kidnapping under false pretenses combined with premeditated chemical endangerment will elevate this from a civil dispute to a federal felony. I’ve already dispatched two off-duty private security agents to watch your room from the floor below. They won't touch a hair on your head, Genevieve."
"What about Chloe?" I asked, my blood boiling at the thought of my college roommate. "How deep is she in this?"
"Deeper than we initially thought," Raymond sighed. "My investigators just pulled the bank records for her boutique interior design company, Aura Design. Over the last six months, Julian transferred nearly eight hundred thousand dollars worth of your commercial contracts directly to her account. But that’s not all. Chloe didn't just sell you out to Julian—she’s been sleeping with him since before you two even got married."
A heavy, suffocating silence filled the room. The air felt thin, barely enough to fill my lungs.
For four years, I had believed that Julian was a hard-working man who simply had an overbearing family. I believed Chloe was my fierce, loyal sister-in-spirit who supported my career while helping me navigate my stormy marriage. In reality, they had constructed a elaborate theater, using my trust, my labor, and my body as collateral for their greed. They had treated my life like a bargain sale.
"Genevieve? Are you still there?" Raymond asked gently.
"I'm here," I whispered, staring at my reflection in the dark window pane. The naive, desperate woman who had begged on her knees on Eleanor’s patio was officially dead. "What's the next step?"
"Tomorrow morning, before they arrive to take you, we execute the first phase of the counter-attack," Raymond said, the rustle of papers audible in the background. "Your father, Arthur Sterling, has signed over full authority regarding the foreclosure of the thirty-acre Vance estate. By 9:00 AM, a formal notice of default will be served directly to Eleanor Vance at her home."
"No," I cut in, a dark idea taking shape in my mind. "Don't send a process server. I want to deliver it myself."
"Genevieve, that’s extremely risky," Raymond warned. "They think you're mentally incapacitated. If you show up—"
"If I show up," I interrupted, "they will panic and make a critical mistake. They think I am weak, sick, and defenseless. Let’s play along with their nightmare, but rewrite the ending."
The following morning at 6:00 AM, before the morning shift change at the hospital, I packed my small bag. The off-duty security detail provided by Raymond was waiting in an unmarked SUV in the basement garage. I changed into a sharp, tailored ivory suit—a stark contrast to the soaked, ratty pajamas I had been humiliated in just forty-eight hours ago.
As the sun began to paint the Philadelphia skyline in shades of bruised purple and amber, we drove straight toward the suburban estate.
The sprawling wrought-iron gates of the Vance property were wide open. Eleanor was standing in the immaculate courtyard, wearing a silk robe and barked orders at a team of landscapers who were preparing the grounds for yet another lavish family gathering. Victoria was sitting nearby on the veranda, casually sipping a mimosa.
When the black SUV pulled into the driveway and stopped right in front of the fountain, Eleanor paused, clutching her coffee cup. Her face turned pale when the back door opened, and I stepped out smoothly, sunglasses shielding my eyes, holding a thick leather folder in my hands.
"Genevieve?" Victoria gasped, nearly dropping her glass. "What... how did you get out of the hospital? Julian said you were out of your mind!"
Eleanor marched down the stone steps, her face twisted in rage, though a flicker of fear danced in her eyes. "How dare you show up here like this! You belong in a facility! You’re sick, unstable—"
"Save your breath, Eleanor," I said, stepping closer until I was inches away from her face. I pulled off my sunglasses and looked into her eyes with an icy calm that made her take a step back. "The tea was a nice touch. Concentrated sedatives mixed with wild valerian. Did you really think an emergency room blood panel wouldn't flag illegal chemical compounds?"
Eleanor stammered, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "I... I don't know what you're talking about! It was an herbal blend for your fever!"
"It was a criminal offense," I snapped. "And as of 8:00 AM this morning, the foreclosure process on this property has officially commenced."
I opened the folder and pulled out a stack of stamped legal documents, slapping them squarely against her chest.
"This thirty-acre land belongs to the Sterling Estate," I declared loudly, my voice echoing across the manicured lawn, reaching the ears of the bewildered landscapers. "You have twenty-six days to pay thirty-two million dollars in back interest and principal principal loans. If you fail, every piece of furniture, every antique, and this entire house will be auctioned off on the federal court steps."

Victoria rushed down the steps, pulling her mother back. "You're crazy! This is Vance family land! You can't do this!"
"I am Genevieve Sterling," I said, leaning in so only the two of them could hear. "And this entire family is about to go bankrupt."
