Chapter 12 - THE LONG ISLAND GALA

Z
The sprawling seaside mansion in Gold Coast, Long Island, shone like a beacon of excessive wealth against the dark Atlantic Ocean. Dozens of luxury sports cars and limousines lined the winding cobblestone driveway, guarded by private security personnel in sleek tuxedos.
Inside the grand ballroom, classical violin music mingled with the quiet clinking of champagne flutes. Manhattan’s highest tier of political figures, corporate titans, and federal judges moved gracefully across the polished marble floors under massive crystal chandeliers.
Standing near the grand staircase in a sweeping black velvet backless gown was Victoria Vance Senior. She radiated absolute power, holding court among a group of appellate court judges, sipping vintage Dom Pérignon.
"Miss Sterling has arrived," a quiet voice whispered in my ear.
I stood near the balcony entrance, wearing an emerald green silk gown that clung perfectly to my figure, my hair styled in elegant vintage waves. Diamonds sparkled at my throat—a gift from my father from my mother’s restored jewelry collection.
Beside me stood Marcus Vance, looking devastatingly handsome in a classic black tuxedo.
"Are you ready for this, Genevieve?" Marcus asked softly, offering me a glass of champagne. "Once we step out of this ballroom, there is no turning back. If my mother’s private security catches us in her study, she will have us eliminated before sunrise."
"I spent four years being terrified of people who wanted to destroy me, Marcus," I replied, taking a small sip of champagne, my eyes locked on Victoria Senior across the room. "I'm done being afraid."
Marcus smiled, a sharp, admiring glint in his eyes. "Follow my lead."
We walked down the marble steps together into the center of the ballroom. As soon as Victoria Vance Senior spotted us, her conversational circle fell silent. Her eyes narrowed into icy slits as she watched her son walking arm-in-arm with her fiercest enemy.
"Marcus," Victoria Senior said, her voice dripping with dangerous calm as we approached her. "I don't recall authorizing a guest pass for Miss Sterling."
"Genevieve is here as my personal guest, Mother," Marcus replied smoothly, bowing his head with mock respect. "I felt it was important that our primary adversary experience the true scale of Vance Capital Global before the federal court hearing on Monday."
Victoria Senior let out a soft, mocking laugh. "An admirable gesture, my son. Though I suspect Miss Sterling is simply here to beg for a settlement before her father’s company goes under."
I stepped forward, looking Victoria Senior straight in her cold eyes. "I don't beg, Victoria. I came to see what two hundred and eighty million dollars of stolen money looks like."
"It looks like absolute victory, my dear," Victoria Senior purred, leaning closer to me. "Your mother was weak. Your father was foolish. And you are simply out of your depth."
"We'll see about that on Monday," I said coolly, turning on my heel and walking toward the terrace gardens, making sure to catch the eye of Victoria Senior's head of security, a heavily built man with a radio earpiece standing near the perimeter wall.
As expected, the head of security tapped his earpiece and began following me onto the terrace.
Plan A was officially in motion.
I walked down the stone stairs into the dimly lit rose gardens overlooking the crashing ocean waves. The head of security followed quietly, his footsteps crunching on the gravel path.
"Miss Sterling," the guard said, stepping out from behind a tall hedge, his hand resting near his jacket. "This area is restricted to private family members."
I stopped, turned around, and smiled sweetly. "I know."
Before the guard could react, my father’s head of security—who had entered the estate disguised as a catering staff member—stepped out from the shadows behind the hedge and drove a high-voltage taser directly into the guard's neck.
The guard collapsed onto the grass without making a sound.
My security detail quickly stripped the guard of his keycard access badge and radio earpiece, handing them straight to me.
"You have six minutes, Miss Sterling," my guard whispered, watching the garden perimeter. "Before his shift rotation realizes he's missing."
"Six minutes is all I need," I said.
I grabbed the keycard, slipped into the side entrance of the estate mansion, and sprinted up the service staircase toward the third-floor private wing where Victoria Senior's master study was located.
My heart hammered against my ribs with every step. Marcus was currently keeping his mother occupied in the main ballroom by initiating a surprise public toast in her honor.
I reached the heavy mahogany doors of the master study, swiped the guard's keycard through the electronic lock, and heard a soft green chime.
The doors unlocked. I stepped inside the dark, quiet room, closing the door behind me.
The study was massive, lined with rare books, oil paintings, and a massive antique desk overlooking the ocean. Resting behind a heavy velvet curtain on the far wall was a massive biometric wall safe.
I rushed over to the safe, pulled out a specialized electronic frequency bypass tool provided by Marcus, and pressed it against the digital keypad.
The red light flashed rapidly: ANALYZING... ANALYZING...
Ten seconds. Twenty seconds.
"Come on... come on..." I whispered, sweating despite the cool room.
The safe beeped softly: ACCESS GRANTED.
The heavy steel door swung open. Inside lay stacks of bearer bonds, offshore ledger books, and right in the center—enclosed in a velvet display case—was the original twenty-five-year-old debt contract signed by Clara Sterling.
I reached out, grabbed the glass case, and opened it.
Suddenly, the lights in the study flashed on with a blinding glare.
"I must admit, Genevieve," a sharp, aristocratic voice rang out from the doorway. "You have much more courage than your mother ever did."
I whipped around, clutching the document to my chest.
Standing in the doorway was Victoria Vance Senior, holding a silver-plated snub-nosed revolver pointed directly at my heart. Behind her stood two armed bodyguards, and right beside her... stood Marcus Vance.
Marcus looked at me, his face completely devoid of emotion, his blue eyes as cold as ice.
"Did you really think my son would betray his own blood for you, Miss Sterling?" Victoria Senior chuckled, a terrifying, victorious sound. "Marcus engineered this entire night just to lure you into stealing federal court evidence."
I looked at Marcus in absolute horror, feeling an icy knife twist in my gut.
"You set me up," I whispered, my voice trembling.
May you like
Marcus stepped forward, standing right beside his mother, and looked down at me with cold contempt.
"Welcome to the Vance family, Genevieve," Marcus said smoothly. "We always win."
