Chapter 13 - THE TRAP WITHIN THE TRAP

Z

The cold barrel of Victoria Vance Senior's revolver remained aimed directly at my chest. The silence in the opulent third-floor study was deafening, save for the distant sound of ocean waves crashing against the cliffs below.

Victoria Senior stepped slowly into the room, her designer gown whispering against the hardwood floor. She looked at me clutching the yellowed document, her lips curled in a triumphant, venomous smile.

"Did you truly believe you were clever, Genevieve?" Victoria mocked, her voice echoing in the vast room. "You thought my own son—my primary heir—would align himself with a middle-class interior designer against the empire he is set to inherit?"

I looked at Marcus Vance. He stood motionless beside his mother, his hands tucked casually into his tuxedo pockets, his expression completely unreadable.

"Marcus told me everything from the moment you stepped into his hotel room in Manhattan," Victoria continued, gesturing with her gun. "The text messages, the secret meetings, the bypass tool... all orchestrated to catch you red-handed committing grand felony burglary on my private property."

She turned her sharp gaze to one of her bodyguards. "Take the document from her. Then call the county sheriff. Miss Sterling will be spending the next twenty years in a maximum-security state prison for armed trespassing and evidence tampering."

The heavy-set bodyguard stepped toward me, his hand outstretched to rip the glass case from my hands.

"I wouldn't touch that if I were you, Victoria," I said, my voice suddenly losing all traces of fear, dropping into a tone of icy, absolute control.

Victoria Senior paused, her brow furrowing slightly. "What did you say?"

I looked directly into Marcus Vance's eyes and gave a subtle, two-finger nod.

In a fraction of a second, Marcus pulled a suppressed pistol from beneath his tuxedo jacket and jammed the barrel directly against the back of Victoria Senior's head.

The room froze in absolute terror.

"Drop your weapon, Mother," Marcus said, his voice flat, razor-sharp, and completely terrifying. "Or your blood will stain this antique rug before your body hitting the floor."

The two bodyguards instantly panicked, pulling their firearms, but Marcus didn't even flinch.

"Tell your men to drop their guns, Mother," Marcus ordered, pressing the barrel harder against her skull. "I have four private security operators standing outside that door with automatic rifles. Try me."

Victoria Senior’s face turned a horrifying shade of white. Her hands began to tremble as she slowly lowered her silver revolver, dropping it onto the floor.

"Marcus..." Victoria whispered, her voice cracking with shock and betrayal. "Are you out of your mind?! I am your mother!"

"You're a monster who destroyed my father," Marcus replied coldly. "And you made the fatal mistake of believing I inherited your greed instead of his hatred for you."

He gestured with his head, and four heavily armed men clad in dark tactical gear burst through the study doors, disarming Victoria's two bodyguards in seconds and forcing them to the floor.

I stepped forward, holding the document tightly, looking at Victoria Senior as her entire world crumbled around her in real-time.

"The trap within the trap," I said softly, offering her a cold smile. "Marcus didn't betray me, Victoria. He betrayed you. He knew you were too paranoid to let anyone else handle your security, so he fed you the exact story you wanted to hear to ensure you would enter this room alone with your private guards."

Victoria Senior glared at me, her chest heaving with rage. "You think this document saves you?! It’s a civil agreement! It proves your mother owed me two hundred and eighty million dollars!"

"It proved that twenty-five years ago, Victoria," Marcus said, stepping around his mother to pull a high-powered UV lantern from his coat pocket. "Now let's see what it proves today."

Marcus clicked the switch on the lantern, casting a deep violet light over the back panel of the yellowed parchment paper.

Instantly, glowing fluorescent text appeared across the back of the document—handwritten chemical ink that had remained hidden for a quarter of a century.

I leaned in and read the glowing words out loud for the room to hear:

“I, Victoria Vance Senior, hereby guarantee the total dismissal of federal chemical safety charges against Arthur Sterling in exchange for the full liquidation of Clara Sterling's land rights. Payment of seven hundred thousand dollars transferred directly to Special Prosecutor Thomas Blake on October 14th.”

Victoria Senior stumbled back against her desk, gasping for air as if she had been struck in the chest.

"Bribery of a federal official, obstruction of justice, and corporate extortion," I said, my voice echoing like a final court judgment. "And because Special Prosecutor Thomas Blake was a federal officer, there is no statute of limitations on federal corruption charges."

"This... this isn't real!" Victoria shrieked, clutching her pearl necklace. "It's a fabrication! Marcus forged it!"

"The ink was chemically tested twenty-five years ago by your own chemist, Mother," Marcus said coldly, pulling out his phone and dialing a number on speakerphone. "And the Assistant United States Attorney is currently waiting on the line."

Marcus spoke clearly into the speakerphone: "Prosecutor Vance here. We have secured the original physical ledger document at the Gold Coast estate. Execute the federal warrants immediately."

Outside the estate mansion, the sound of blaring sirens began to echo down the Long Island coastline. Red and blue police lights flashed through the high study windows, illuminating the dark room.

Victoria Vance Senior collapsed into her leather desk chair, her eyes wide, staring at her son as if seeing a ghost.

"You destroyed our family legacy, Marcus," she wept hysterically. "For what?! For her?!"

Marcus looked down at his mother, his face cold and unyielding.

"I didn't destroy our legacy for Genevieve, Mother," Marcus said softly, turning his back on her as federal agents burst into the study to place her under arrest. "I destroyed it for my father."

Marcus turned to me, offering his hand as the federal agents slapped heavy handcuffs onto Victoria Senior's wrists.

"Come on, Genevieve," Marcus said gently. "Let's go finish this."
