Chapter 6 - THE SHOWDOWN

Z
The grand lobby of Aura Design was buzzing with energy. Flashbulbs strobed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows as local news reporters, interior design journalists, and wealthy prospective clients gathered around the temporary stage set up in the center of the showroom.
Chloe Hayes stood near the podium, glowing in a shimmering emerald cocktail dress. She held a glass of champagne in one hand, laughing charmingly as she posed for photographer flashes. Behind her, a massive digital banner displayed the logo of her firm merging with a shell corporation named Vance Global Holdings.
She believed she had won. She believed I was currently tucked away in a private clinic, heavily medicated and forgotten.
"Thank you, everyone, for coming on such short notice!" Chloe’s voice echoed through the crisp sound system as she took the microphone. She beamed at the crowd with practiced grace. "Today marks a monumental milestone for Aura Design. We are announcing an exclusive thirty-million-dollar partnership to redesign the luxury estate sector in Greater Philadelphia!"
The crowd applauded enthusiastically.
"This vision," Chloe continued, wiping away a fake tear, "was born out of hard work, integrity, and absolute loyalty to design excellence. Through dedication, I have proven that a woman can build an empire from scratch—"
"Built from scratch, Chloe?" a clear, resonant voice cut through the applause like a diamond slicing through glass. "Or built on stolen client contracts and corporate embezzlement?"
The room fell dead silent. The reporters turned their cameras toward the back entrance of the showroom.
I walked down the central aisle slowly, deliberately, the sound of my high heels clicking rhythmically against the polished concrete floor. Behind me walked four uniformed officers from the Philadelphia Police Department and two corporate fraud investigators from the District Attorney's office.
Chloe’s fake smile shattered instantly. The champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the floor, sending sparkling wine splashing across her designer shoes.
"Genevieve?" she whispered, her voice amplified through the microphone she forgot she was holding.
"Good afternoon, Chloe," I said, stopping right at the foot of the stage, looking up at her with cold contempt. "You forgot to invite your co-founder to the launch party."
Murmurs erupted through the crowd. Camera shutters clicked frantically as reporters sensed the massive scandal unfolding before their eyes.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Chloe panicked, clutching the podium, her knuckles turning white. "Security! Get this woman out of here! She is mentally unstable! She’s escaping medical treatment!"
"The only place anyone is going today, Chloe, is federal custody," I announced loudly, turning to face the wall of news cameras.
I gestured to Raymond, who walked up next to me and opened a briefcase, handing a stack of certified legal documents to the lead police officer.
"As of 1:00 PM today," I addressed the crowd and the cameras directly, "the District Attorney’s office has issued an emergency freeze on all assets associated with Aura Design and Vance Global Holdings. Over the past year, Chloe Hayes, in conspiracy with Julian Vance, fraudulently redirected over two million dollars in commercial design contracts from my firm, Sterling Interiors."
"You're lying!" Chloe shrieked, her voice turning high-pitched and hysterical. "I built this company! You're jealous! You're just bitter because Julian didn't want you anymore!"
"Is that why Julian transferred two hundred thousand dollars from my business account to buy your penthouse on Rittenhouse Square three weeks ago?" I asked smoothly, pulling up the banking documents on the primary projector screen behind her using a wireless remote.
The huge screen flashed with high-definition images of wire transfers, forged signatures, and text messages between Chloe and Julian detailing their scheme to drug me and seize my inheritance.
Gasps filled the showroom. Journalists began shouting questions, their cameras capturing every second of Chloe’s humiliation.
"Look at the screen, ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice steady and unyielding. "This is what Chloe Hayes calls 'loyalty and integrity.'"
Chloe looked at the screen, her face flushed with dark rage and public humiliation. Realizing her cover was entirely blown, her polished facade completely disintegrated.
She lunged off the stage directly toward me, her manicured nails reaching for my face. "You ruined everything, you little bitch!"
Before she could touch me, the lead police officer grabbed her arms, twisting them behind her back and forcing her down against the edge of the stage.
"Chloe Hayes, you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit chemical endangerment," the officer recited cold, pulling out handcuffs. "You have the right to remain silent..."
Chloe thrashed against the handcuffs, her mascara running down her cheeks in messy black streaks as she screamed at the news cameras: "Julian made me do it! It was Julian’s idea! He promised me half the land! Don't look at me like that! He set everything up!"
As the officers dragged the sobbing, hysterical woman through the crowd of flashing cameras, I stood tall in the center of the room.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a notification from my security team stationed near the Vance estate.
I opened the alert. It was a live video feed from the estate driveway.
Julian was desperately packing leather suitcases into the trunk of his car, while Eleanor stood on the porch screaming at a team of court marshals who were padlock gates and placing yellow seizure tags on the front doors.
I took a deep breath, feeling the cool air fill my lungs. The trap had been sprung, and every single rat was caught.

"Where to now, Genevieve?" Raymond asked, walking up beside me as the chaotic crowd began to disperse.
"To the Vance estate," I replied, pulling my sunglasses down over my eyes. "It's time to collect the final debt."
