Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

Z
The grand ballroom on the third floor of the Grand Crest Hotel was filled with an uncomfortable, buzzing tension. Members of the regional executive board, senior corporate attorneys, and major hotel shareholders sat along a long mahogany table, whispering nervously among themselves.
At the front of the room stood Lawrence Bennett, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, gesturing toward a large presentation screen showing forged bank transactions.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the board,” Lawrence announced in a grave, sorrowful voice that echoed through the room. “It is with a heavy heart that I present these findings. Over the last four years, Mr. Mason Vance has been secretly diverting operational profits into unauthorized off-shore accounts. When I confronted him with these records this morning, he became volatile, locked himself in the archives, and attempted to purge the system.”
A collective gasp swept through the room. Chef Brandon Cole stood in the corner, nodding along dutifully, while Laura Stone sat silently in a chair, staring at the floor with hollow, terrified eyes.
“Fortunately,” Lawrence continued, raising a sleek silver flash drive, “our IT security team managed to isolate the breach. I have already notified federal authorities, and an arrest warrant for Mr. Vance is currently being drawn up—”
BANG!
The heavy double doors of the grand ballroom flew open, slamming against the polished wood walls with a sound like a gunshot.
Every head in the room spun around.
Mason Vance marched into the ballroom, his expensive suit coat dust-streaked from the basement archives, his tie loosened, and his eyes burning with an unholy fury. By his side walked Samuel Drake, holding a heavy cardboard box overflowing with original paper files. Right behind them was Lily Parker, holding her worn grey backpack, her head held high.
“The only arrest warrant being drawn up today, Lawrence,” Mason’s voice boomed across the vast hall, “is for you.”
Lawrence’s calm demeanor cracked for a fraction of a second, his eyes widening in sheer shock as he stared at Maria Santos standing at the back door. But he recovered quickly, putting on a tragic smile.
“Mason... please,” Lawrence said soothingly, raising his hands in a theatrical gesture of pity. “Don’t make this harder on yourself. You’re clearly under immense psychological strain. Board members, as you can see, Mr. Vance has brought a street child into a formal executive proceeding—”
“Shut your mouth, Lawrence!” Mason roared, stepping right up to the stage and slamming a thick bundle of physical documents directly onto the podium in front of the lead shareholder.
“Members of the board,” Mason announced, turning to face the stunned executives. “What you see on that digital screen is a complete fabrication created by Lawrence Bennett using spoofed IP addresses and forged digital signatures. In this box are twelve years of original physical delivery receipts, hand-signed kickback agreements, and black-market purchasing logs recovered from the locked basement archive.”
Samuel Drake immediately stepped forward, plugging a laptop into the main AV projector. The forged financial charts vanished from the giant screen, replaced by high-resolution scans of the physical documents Mason had just retrieved.
“These are the original receiving forms signed by former line cook Joanne Parker seven months ago,” Samuel explained to the board in a crisp, razor-sharp voice. “They show that Crestline Purchasing Solutions—a shell company owned entirely by Lawrence Bennett’s brother-in-law—was billing this hotel $80 a pound for prime organic beef while delivering $12 commercial scrap meat. When Joanne Parker refused to sign off on the fake inventory, Lawrence manually edited her reports and forged Mr. Vance’s signature to terminate her.”
The board members gasped, leaning in to examine the physical paper trail.
“This is absurd! These papers are forged!” Chef Brandon yelled, panic completely breaking his composure. “That kid’s mother was a thief! She stole thousands of dollars in high-end ingredients!”
Mason spun around, stepping directly into Brandon’s personal space. “Is that why you tried to send a fake investigator to Joanne’s hospital room two hours ago, Brandon? To intimidate a woman in a coma before she could speak to the police?”
Brandon turned ghost-white. “I... I didn't... Lawrence told me to—”
“You idiot!” Lawrence snapped, turning on the chef with venomous fury.
“So you admit it?” Mason pressed coldly.
Lawrence realized his fatal mistake instantly, but the room was already spinning out of his control. He backed away toward the side exit, reaching into his jacket pocket.
“You think a few old papers change anything, Mason?” Lawrence hissed, his voice dropping into a dark, desperate snarling tone. “I built this hotel! I made this place profitable! You think these rich shareholders care about some poor cook from Southtown? They care about dividends!”
“We care about federal fraud and wire embezzlement, Lawrence,” the lead shareholder said coldly, standing up from his seat. “And we certainly care about corporate liability.”

Sirens began to wail in the distance outside the Grand Crest Hotel, drawing closer by the second.
Lawrence’s eyes darted frantically around the room like a trapped animal. Seeing no way out, his gaze landed on Lily Parker, who was standing near the projector table. In a sudden, violent burst of desperation, Lawrence lunged forward, grabbing the young girl by her denim jacket!
