Chapter 2 - The Betrayal Unveiled

The boardroom hung in a suffocating, razor-thin silence. The ticking of the mahogany wall clock echoed like a countdown. Laura Stone’s hands trembled violently against her crossed arms, her eyes fixed on Lawrence Bennett in absolute disbelief.
“You framed me,” Laura’s voice cracked, her calm facade crumbling into sheer panic. “You used my terminal credentials last night while I was driving home! I gave you my master override code last month because you said corporate needed an emergency ledger reconciliation!”
Lawrence did not even flinch. He adjusted his silk tie with meticulous grace, leaning back into his leather armchair as if he were discussing a minor clerical error rather than a multi-million-dollar corporate embezzlement scheme.
“Laura, please refrain from hysterical outbursts,” Lawrence said, his tone dripping with smooth, condescending composure. “We all know that password security is the sole responsibility of the account holder. If your login was used to wipe executive audit trails, the liability sits firmly on your shoulders.”
“You bastard!” Laura shrieked, slamming her palms onto the glass table. She turned frantically toward Mason Vance. “Mr. Vance, I swear on my life, I knew nothing about deleting files! Yes, I saw discrepancies in the quarterly invoices—I saw how Chef Brandon was ordering cheap commercial stock—but Lawrence told me it was part of an approved tax restructuring plan directly from your corporate desk!”
“And you believed him without a single signature from me?” Mason asked, his voice low, cold, and heavy as iron.
“He showed me emails!” Laura sobbed, reaching into her leather handbag and pulling out a bundle of printed digital correspondence. “Look at these! Letters signed with your electronic signature, authorizing shell company payments to ‘Crestline Purchasing Solutions LLC’!”
Samuel Drake immediately leaned over, snatching the papers from Laura’s trembling fingers. He scanned the header codes, his eyes narrowing. “These headers are spoofed,” Samuel declared, looking up at Mason. “The IP address routing originates from a private VPN registered to a residential address in Alamo Heights. Lawrence, isn't that where your secondary property is located?”
For the first time since the morning began, Lawrence’s unshakeable grin faltered. A dangerous, cold glint flickered in his eyes. He leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the table, staring directly at Mason.
“You think you’re so righteous, don’t you, Mason?” Lawrence sneered, abandoning his polite demeanor entirely. “You drop in once every six months from your comfortable corporate tower in Dallas, expecting a five-star luxury machine to run itself without getting your hands dirty. Do you have any idea what it takes to keep this place afloat?”
“It doesn’t take robbing me blind and destroying innocent lives,” Mason replied coldly. “You stole millions. You ruined Joanne Parker’s reputation, fabricated police reports, and pushed a sick woman into a stroke from pure stress.”
“Joanne Parker was a loose cannon who didn’t know her place!” Brandon Cole blurted out, his sweat-stained collar clinging to his neck. “She was digging through kitchen dumpsters, tracking serial numbers on cheese boxes! She was going to ruin everything!”
“Shut up, Brandon!” Lawrence barked, casting a lethal glare at the chef. But the damage was done. The confession hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.
Mason stood up slowly, tall and intimidating, towering over the boardroom table. He gestured toward Frank Ross, the head of security. “Frank, call the San Antonio Police Department. Tell them we have a ongoing corporate fraud investigation, identity theft, and destruction of evidence.”
“Wait,” Lawrence said smoothly, though a vein throbbed on his temple. He slowly pulled a sleek leather binder from his briefcase and slid it toward Mason. “Before you call the authorities, Mr. Vance, I suggest you take a very close look at those documents.”
Mason didn't touch the binder. “What is this?”
“That is the paper trail showing that over the last three years, forty percent of the embezzled funds were funneled directly into offshore accounts registered under Vance Holdings,” Lawrence whispered, a predatory smirk returning to his face. “If I go down, Mason, the Texas Bureau of Investigation will freeze every single asset you own. The press will consume your empire alive. They won't care about a thirteen-year-old girl or a sick cook. They will see a billionaire using his executive staff as scapegoats for tax evasion.”
Mason stared at the black binder, his heart pounding against his ribs. The trap had been laid long before he stepped foot in San Antonio. Lawrence hadn't just been stealing money; he had been constructing a dead-man's switch designed to destroy Mason if he was ever caught.
Before Mason could speak, the boardroom door burst open.

Lily Parker stood in the doorway, her grey backpack slung over one shoulder, her eyes wild with terror. Behind her, a nurse from the local public hospital was trying to hold her back.
“Mr. Mason!” Lily gasped, tears streaming down her face. “It’s my mom... the hospital just called. Someone went into her room twenty minutes ago claiming to be an investigator from the hotel!”
