Chapter 4 - Locked Away Secrets

The sudden darkness was absolute, suffocating, and heavy. The air inside the sealed archive room immediately began to feel thin and stagnant.
“Mr. Mason!” Lily cried out, her small voice trembling as her flashlight beam whipped wildly across the rows of cold metal cabinets.
“I’m right here, Lily. Don’t move,” Mason said calmly, keeping his voice steady despite the surge of adrenaline pouring through his veins. He rushed to the heavy steel door and slammed his shoulder against it. It didn't budge an inch. The heavy deadbolt outside was completely engaged.
Mason pounded his fist against the reinforced metal. “Is anyone out there? Open this door!”
Only the dull, rhythmic thrumming of the hotel’s main boiler pipes answered him from the other side of the thick concrete walls. Cell phone signal was completely nonexistent three stories beneath the pavement.
“They locked us in,” Lily whispered, sitting down heavily on an overturned document crate, holding her grey backpack tightly against her chest. “Just like they trapped my mom. They’re going to delete everything upstairs while we’re stuck down here, aren’t they?”
“Not on my watch,” Mason said, turning back to the filing cabinets. He pointed his phone flashlight at the rusty metal locks. “Lawrence thinks he’s trapped us with our hands tied, but he just handed us every piece of evidence we need to put him away for the rest of his life. We use this time to find everything.”
For the next two hours, working in the freezing dampness of the underground vault, Mason and Lily went through the yellowed paper archives page by page. What they uncovered went far beyond simple kitchen fraud.
Lawrence Bennett had not been acting alone. The physical invoices proved that he was running an elaborate corporate blackmail ring. For twelve years, Lawrence had been skimming millions from the hotel’s operating budget, using a network of fake shell companies to buy substandard supplies while pocketing the difference. But the true horror was hidden in a locked blue folder marked SPECIAL PERSONNEL FILE - CONFIDENTIAL.
Mason broke the lock on the folder with a rusty screwdriver he found on a workbench. Inside were copies of medical records, altered shift schedules, and forged confession statements targeting dozens of low-income hotel employees over the last decade.
Whenever a worker—like Joanne Parker—noticed the discrepancy in high-end food shipments, Lawrence and Chef Brandon would systematically frame them for theft, force them to sign non-disclosure agreements under threat of criminal prosecution, and wipe their employment history clean.
“Look at this date,” Mason said, his heart sinking as he held up an original receiving log from seven months prior.
It was a handwritten note signed by Joanne Parker herself, stamped in red ink: REJECTED - SUBSTANDARD GOODS DETECTED. NOTIFYING EXECUTIVE BOARD.
Pasted to the back of the log was an internal memo written by Lawrence Bennett to Brandon Cole. The memo read: Subject: Joanne Parker. Neutralize immediately. Fabricate $12,000 pantry loss. Ensure Vance signature stamp is applied to termination notice.
“He used my name,” Mason whispered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the paper. “He made Joanne believe I was the one ordering her destruction.”
“My mom cried every single night for a month,” Lily said softly, a tear tracing a path through the dust on her cheek. “She kept saying, ‘Mr. Vance knows, and he doesn’t care about us.’ She tried to write you that letter, but when Lawrence showed her the signed rejection notice with your name on it, her spirit just broke. That was the week she had her stroke.”
A heavy wave of guilt washed over Mason. He had built an empire of luxury hotels, believing that delegating authority to long-tenured managers was the sign of a modern leader. In reality, his negligence had allowed a monster to turn his grand establishment into a house of fear and corruption.
“I’m going to fix this, Lily,” Mason said, looking the thirteen-year-old girl in the eye with absolute conviction. “I promise you, your mother’s name will be cleared, and these men will pay for every tear your family shed.”
Suddenly, a loud metallic scrape vibrated through the steel door.
Mason stepped in front of Lily, grabbing a heavy metal crowbar from the workbench. He raised it, preparing for a confrontation.
The deadbolt ground open slowly. The heavy door swung inward, revealing a figure standing in the dim hallway silhouette, holding a flashlight.
It wasn't Lawrence or his security goons.

It was Maria Santos, the restaurant manager, her face pale and her hands shaking as she held a master key card and a heavy set of maintenance tools.
“Mr. Vance!” Maria gasped in a hushed whisper. “Thank God you’re alive! You have to hurry—Lawrence just called an emergency board meeting upstairs, and he’s claiming you fled the hotel after destroying corporate tax records!”
