Chapter 11 - The Lion’s Den

The rain beat relentlessly against the glass exterior of the Vance Global Tower in downtown Dallas. Rising sixty stories above the city, the sleek black skyscraper was the nerve center of the entire Vance family fortune.
At eight in the evening, the high-speed glass elevator shot up to the executive penthouse floor.
Mason Vance stepped out onto the plush carpet of the sixty-first floor. The private office was vast, lined with rare art pieces and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the storm-swept city skyline.
Sitting behind a massive mahogany desk at the far end of the room was Richard Vance, calmly swirling an amber glass of expensive scotch. Two broad-shouldered corporate security guards stood quietly near the entrance doors.
“I expected you hours ago, Mason,” Richard said smoothly, pointing to an empty leather armchair across from his desk. “Sit. Have a drink. You look exhausted.”
Mason didn't sit. He walked straight up to the desk, slamming a heavy thumb drive onto the polished mahogany surface.
“On that drive are the complete, unedited server logs from the Grand Crest basement archive,” Mason said coldly. “Along with the testimony of Laura Stone, the transport records from Aegis Freight, and the forensic trace of the three point five million dollars transferred using my father’s forged digital signature.”
Richard didn't even look at the thumb drive. He took a slow sip of his scotch, smiling with quiet amusement.
“Do you really think a digital paper trail matters in my world, nephew?” Richard asked softly. “I own the auditing firms. I fund the campaigns of the regional district attorneys. By tomorrow morning, the public will only remember that a street cook’s mother poisoned guests in Austin, and that you suffered a nervous breakdown after your father died.”
“My father knew what you were doing, didn't he?” Mason asked, his voice shaking with restrained rage. “That’s why he took away your direct operational control over the hotel division before he passed away.”
Richard’s smile vanished instantly. His eyes turned dark, sharp, and predatory. He set his glass down on the desk with a heavy clatter.
“Your father was a weak, fearful man who lacked vision!” Richard spat, standing up slowly. “Arthur thought he could run a global conglomerate like a corner grocery store, worrying about moral ethics and employee welfare! I am the one who expanded our footprint into global logistics! I made this family wealthy beyond measure!”
“You made us criminals,” Mason corrected sharply. “You used innocent workers like Joanne Parker as human shields to cover your smuggling operations.”
“Joanne Parker is a nobody!” Richard barked, walking around the desk to stand inches from Mason. “She is a line cook from a decaying neighborhood! Her life, her daughter’s life, her mother’s life—they are rounding errors on my balance sheet! And if you continue this foolish crusade, Mason, I will ensure that neither she nor her daughter ever find work, housing, or safety in this state again.”
Mason stared at his uncle, feeling no fear—only a profound, burning disgust.
“You really think you’ve thought of everything, don't you, Richard?” Mason whispered softly.
“I know I have,” Richard sneered. “You have no leverage here, Mason. You are alone in my office, surrounded by my security team, while your hotel in San Antonio is being shut down by state inspectors.”
Mason slowly reached into his suit jacket pocket. The security guards immediately took a step forward, but Mason didn't pull a weapon.
He pulled out a small, high-powered wireless receiver, blinking with a steady green light.
“I’m not alone, Richard,” Mason said, a ghost of a cold smile appearing on his lips. “And I didn't come here to negotiate.”
Richard’s brow furrowed in sudden confusion. “What is that?”
“This is a live broadcast transmitter,” Mason explained calmly. “Every word you have said in this office for the last ten minutes—your confession about Aegis Freight, your admission of forging health reports, and your threat against Joanne Parker’s family—has been streamed live in high-definition audio and video.”

Richard’s face drained of all color. “Streamed where? To the police?”
“No,” Mason replied, stepping back toward the glass elevator as the doors slid open behind him. “To the live national press conference currently being held in the Grand Crest Hotel ballroom by Samuel Drake, Detective Ramos, and Chef Joanne Parker.”
