Zero nine

Chapter 9 - Shadows Above the ThroneZ

My blood ran cold. The phone nearly slipped from my hand as I stared at the photo. The red crosshairs of an optical sight were centered directly on the rear doors of the courthouse—the exact exit the marshals were about to use to clear us out.

"Julian," I whispered, keeping my voice low so the court staff wouldn't panic. "Look at this."

Julian leaned over, his eyes narrowing as he read the message and viewed the image. His face transformed instantly from grief to pure, cold fury. "The Vanguard Group," he muttered through gritted teeth.

"Who?" I asked, pulling Noah closer.

"The shadow syndicate behind Sterling Global's international holdings," Julian explained rapidly, grabbing my arm and pulling me back toward Judge Thomas’s bench. "My father wasn't acting alone. He borrowed over two hundred million dollars from an elite offshore cartel to buy out the remaining board shares. They used Noah’s trust as collateral. If Noah stays with you—or if he remains under federal protection—the trust is frozen, and Vanguard loses their entire investment."

"Your Honor!" Julian called out to Judge Thomas. "We have an active sniper threat outside the building. Lock down the perimeter immediately!"

Judge Thomas’s eyes widened. She instantly hit the emergency panic button under her desk. Sirens began to blare throughout the federal building, heavy steel security shutters slamming down over the ground-floor windows with deafening thuds.

"They won't shoot inside a federal court," Judge Thomas said, her voice steady despite the chaos. "Federal SWAT is five minutes away. You are safe in here."

"They don't need to shoot inside," I realized, my legal mind piecing together the tactical scenario. "They just need to cut the power, cause a panic, and extract Noah during the evacuation!"

Right on cue, the lights inside Courtroom 4 flickered once, twice, and plunged into absolute darkness.

The emergency backup generators kicked on two seconds later, casting a eerie, red-hued glow over the room. The air conditioning units died, replaced by the ominous silence of a compromised facility.

"Marshals! Secure the bench!" the lead marshal shouted, pulling his firearm.

Suddenly, a heavy tear-gas canister crashed through the high ventilation duct, filling the courtroom with thick, burning white smoke. Coughing fits broke out instantly. People were stumbling, disoriented, screaming in the dark.

"Clara! Give me your hand!" Julian yelled over the commotion.

I grabbed his jacket, holding Noah tucked tightly inside my coat, shielding his tiny face from the toxic gas with my wet scarf. We stumbled through the blinding smoke toward the judge's private chambers behind the bench.

A figure stepped out of the fog in front of us—dressed in dark tactical gear, wearing a night-vision respirator mask. He raised a silenced pistol directly at Julian’s chest.

"Leave the infant," the assassin's voice sounded muffled behind the filter. "And you walk away."

Before the gunman could pull the trigger, I swung my heavy leather law briefcase with all the momentum in my body, slamming it directly into the side of his helmet. The strike threw his aim off; a silenced ptht echoed as a bullet shattered the marble wall behind us.

Julian didn't hesitate. He tackled the operative to the ground with brutal force, slamming his head against the hardwood floor until the man went limp. Julian scrambled to his feet, grabbing the fallen operative's keycard and weapon.

"This way! The judicial private elevator leads directly to the subterranean transit tunnels!" Julian yelled, dragging me into the private corridor.

We threw ourselves into the reinforced steel elevator just as more dark figures entered the smoked-filled courtroom. The heavy doors slid shut, sealing out the sounds of gunfire and shouting as the cabin dropped rapidly into the depths beneath Boston.

"They're everywhere," I gasped, leaning against the elevator wall, my heart hammering against my chest. "Marlene, Caleb, Arthur, and now an international syndicate... How deep does this corruption go?"

"It goes all the way to the top of the financial world, Clara," Julian said, checking the magazine on the captured pistol. "But they made one huge mistake."

May you like

"What mistake?"

Julian looked at me, his gray eyes burning with lethal intent. "They forced you and me onto the same side."
