Chapter 4 - Blood and IronZ

The door slammed shut, cutting off the noise of the outside world into total, eerie silence. The glass was heavy, reinforced armor plating. As the driver slammed on the accelerator, tearing away from the university campus, I looked out the rear window. The tactical men from the black SUVs were already swarm-searching the sidewalk, realizing too late that their target had slipped through their fingers.
"Where are you taking us?" I demanded, cradling Noah tightly against my chest. "If this is a kidnapping, Julian—"
"If I wanted to kidnap my nephew, I wouldn't be sitting in the backseat next to a legal-aid prodigy who knows the exact statutory penalty for federal abduction," Julian interrupted, pulling an encrypted tablet from his leather briefcase. He tapped the screen rapidly. "I am taking you to my private estate in Rhode Island. It is the only property on the coast that my father's security clearance cannot bypass."
"Why would your own father hunt his infant grandson?" I asked, trying to piece together the chaotic puzzle. "He’s a newborn! What threat could he possibly pose to Arthur Sterling?"
Julian paused, his fingers hovering over the screen. He turned to look at me, his gaze scanning my face as if searching for any sign of deception. "Noah isn't just Elena's son. He is the sole legal heir to thirty percent of Sterling Global's controlling shares. When my grandfather drafted the family trust, he stipulated that the shares would bypass my father entirely and pass directly to Elena's firstborn child to prevent my father from liquidating the company."
The financial puzzle pieces snapped into place instantly. "Elena didn't hide because she was ashamed," I whispered, the realization washing over me like cold water. "She was hiding to protect her baby from being used as a corporate bargaining chip."
"She was hiding because my father wanted to place Noah under a corrupt, corporate guardianship where he could control the vote of those shares until Noah turned twenty-five," Julian corrected grimly. "When Elena fled, she cut off all contact. She trusted no one. Not even me."
"And why should I trust you?" I asked, leaning away from him. "You're a Sterling. You stand to gain just as much if your father falls."
Julian looked down at Noah. For the first time, his icy demeanor melted entirely, exposing a deep, agonizing guilt. "Because I was the one who helped Elena escape six months ago," he confessed softly. "I gave her the fake IDs. I set up the untraceable bank accounts. But my father found out, blocked her funds, and forced her deeper into the shadows. She ended up at St. Catherine’s because she had nowhere else to go. I failed my sister, Clara. I am not going to fail her son."
We drove in tense silence for hours as the city skyline faded into the jagged, rocky coastline of New England. The Sterling Estate in Rhode Island was a fortress—a sprawling modern mansion carved into the side of an ocean cliff, surrounded by high concrete walls, security checkpoints, and private guards.
When the heavy iron gates closed behind us, I finally allowed myself to breathe out a sigh of relief. But my relief was short-lived.
As we stepped into the grand marble foyer of the estate, a woman dressed in a sharp navy business suit was waiting for us. She held a thick leather binder in her hands, her expression as sharp and cold as shattered glass.
"Mr. Sterling," she said, nodding curtly to Julian before turning her predatory gaze onto me. "You're late. The State Child Protective Services director is on line two, and your aunt Marlene's legal defense team has just filed a sworn affidavit claiming Miss Hayes stole forty thousand dollars from her personal safe before fleeing the graduation ceremony."

My head snapped up. "That's a complete lie! Marlene embezzled my survivor funds! The police arrested her!"
"Marlene was released on bail an hour ago, Clara," the woman replied with a chilly smile. "Paid for by an anonymous donor. And right now, on paper... you look like an unemployed, fugitive college graduate who just kidnapped a high-profile infant."
