Chapter 8 - The Crimson ThreadZ

Arthur Sterling's face did not pale. Instead, a slow, terrifyingly cold sneer spread across his features. "You are playing a game far beyond your comprehension, girl. You think a few doctored email logs prove anything against me?"

"They aren't emails, Arthur," I said, stepping closer to the rail, my eyes locked onto his with unwavering fury. "They are wire transfer confirmations from your offshore shell company, Apex Holdings, sent directly to the attending physician at St. Catherine's—Dr. Harrison—the very man who declared Elena dead on arrival."

Julian lunged forward, grabbing his father by the lapels of his suit with a roar of pure rage. "You killed her?! You let Elena die?!"

"Get your hands off me, Julian!" Arthur barked, though he couldn't hide the subtle twitch of fear in his eyes as two federal marshals immediately stepped between them, pulling Julian back.

"Your Honor!" I called out over the chaos. "The records show that Elena suffered from severe post-partum hemorrhaging—a completely treatable condition if emergency intervention is applied immediately. But Dr. Harrison delayed her blood transfusion by forty-five minutes. And three hours later, fifty thousand dollars was deposited into Harrison's Swiss bank account from Apex Holdings."

Judge Thomas’s face turned into a mask of pure thunder. She inserted the flash drive into her bench computer, her eyes scanning the verified digital signatures and state-authenticated timestamps.

"This isn't just academic fraud," Judge Thomas whispered, her voice chilling the room to absolute zero. "This is evidence of capital murder and conspiracy."

Arthur’s lead attorney frantically grabbed his client's arm. "Arthur... say nothing. Not another word."

"It gets worse, Your Honor," I continued, unrolling a second document. "Arthur Sterling paid Marlene Hayes to orchestrate my academic ruin because he knew I was interning at the legal aid clinic handling St. Catherine's medical records. He knew that if I looked into Elena's file, I would discover the forged death certificate. He didn't just want Noah's shares—he wanted to silence anyone who could uncover his daughter's murder."

Arthur slammed his fist onto the wooden railing. "She was a disgrace to this family! She was going to give thirty percent of my company to a bastard child! I built Sterling Global! I will not let it be destroyed by an ungrateful girl and a orphan parasite!"

"Thank you, Mr. Sterling," Judge Thomas said calmly, pressing an intercom button on her desk. "That spontaneous admission has been recorded on the federal court record."

Arthur froze, suddenly realizing the fatal trap he had just walked into. In his supreme arrogance, he had confessed his motive in front of a federal judge and three federal marshals.

"By authority of the Federal District Court," Judge Thomas declared, her gavel coming down with the finality of a guillotine blade, "I hereby issue an immediate Federal Custody Protection Order placing baby Noah into the temporary legal guardianship of Clara Hayes, under federal witness protection status. Furthermore, I issue an immediate federal arrest warrant for Arthur Sterling on charges of federal wire fraud, witness tampering, and accessory to depraved-heart murder."

Federal Marshals stepped forward, their handguns drawn. "Arthur Sterling, put your hands behind your back!"

"You can't do this!" Arthur screamed, struggling as the heavy steel cuffs were slapped onto his wrists. "I own this city! I own the governor! You will all rot in prison for this!"

As Arthur was dragged kicking and screaming out of the double doors, the courtroom fell into a quiet, heavy silence.

Julian stood there, breathing heavily, his head bowed in absolute devastation. The reality that his own father had effectively orchestrated his sister's death was a blow no amount of wealth or power could soften.

He turned slowly to look at me and Noah.

"Clara..." Julian whispered, his voice trembling. "I... I had no idea. I swear to God, I didn't know."

"I know you didn't," I said softly, walking over to him. "You saved us on that ocean, Julian. You chose Noah over your father's empire."

Before Julian could answer, my phone buzzed again. It was a text message from an unknown, encrypted number. I opened it, expecting another legal alert.

Instead, it was a high-resolution photo of the federal courthouse entrance—taken from a sniper's perspective across the street. Attached was a short text message:

Arthur was just a middleman. Hand over the baby, Clara, or you won't make it to the parking lot.
