Chapter 5 - The Trap SprungZ

The floor felt like it was shifting beneath my feet. Marlene was out. It didn't take a genius to figure out who had posted her exorbitant bail—Arthur Sterling. The corporate tyrant was pooling his resources with my abusive aunt, uniting two desperate predators to crush a common enemy.

"This is Evelyn Vance," Julian introduced smoothly, though his jaw was clenched tightly. "She is my lead corporate counsel. Evelyn, clear Clara’s name immediately. Present the university evidence to the prosecutor."

"I can't do that, Julian," Evelyn stated, opening her binder. "Because the prosecutor who handled Marlene’s arrest was replaced thirty minutes ago by District Attorney Marcus Cole—a man who sits on your father's charitable board. The university records you sent? They've been flagged as corrupted data files. Someone wiped the registrar's main server."

"Caleb," I muttered, my hands shaking. "Caleb had backdoor administrative access. They cleared the server before the police could fully secure the digital backup."

"Precisely," Evelyn said, looking at me with something resembling pity. "Miss Hayes, as it stands right now, you have no legal standing, no proof of your academic immunity, an active warrant for grand theft issued in your home county, and an emergency child recovery order signed by a family court judge."

I held Noah tighter to my chest. He was sleeping through the storm, completely oblivious to the fact that the entire legal system was being reshaped to tear him from my arms.

"They won't take him," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying a fierce, dangerous quietness. "I don't care how many judges your father buys. I survived sixteen years under Marlene's roof. I spent two years studying the exact legal loopholes these corrupt monsters use to destroy people. You think you're the only ones who know how to play dirty?"

Julian looked at me, a sudden spark of dark amusement flickering in his eyes. "What are you thinking, Clara?"

"Evelyn," I said, turning to the high-powered attorney. "When Caleb wiped the registrar's server, did he use the university's local network or an external VPN?"

Evelyn blinked, surprised by the technical query. "Local. The police report noted the command originated from inside the campus administration building."

"Then he made a fatal mistake," I said, a cold smile spreading across my face. "University servers run an automated dual-mirror backup to the State Department of Education every night at midnight. Caleb thought he was deleting the primary database, but all he did was trigger an automatic lock on the state archive. The evidence isn't gone. It's sitting in a secure state vault that even Arthur Sterling's district attorney can't touch without a federal court order."

Julian stepped closer, his gaze locked onto mine with intense fascination. "And how do we get a federal court order before my father's men show up at these gates with a state warrant?"

"We don't," I replied. "We use my legal aid credentials. I still have active clearance as a certified student advocate under Judge Evelyn Thomas at the Eastern District Federal Court. If I file an emergency writ of Habeas Corpus directly with her office, alleging systemic corruption and child trafficking involving a state official, she will freeze all state warrants automatically."

Evelyn Vance stared at me, her mouth slightly open. "That... that would legally freeze every state court order, including Arthur's custody claim, for at least seventy-two hours."

"Seventy-two hours," Julian repeated, a slow, lethal grin spreading across his face. "That is more than enough time for me to destroy my father's board of directors."

"There's just one problem," I added, looking at Julian sternly. "Judge Thomas doesn't accept digital filings for emergency child protective writs. She requires the physical petitioner to present the child and the petition in person at the federal courthouse in Boston."

Before Julian could answer, the security alarm system inside the estate began to chime softly—a low, rhythmic pulse that painted the marble walls in flashing red light.

Evelyn checked her phone. Her face went pale. "They're here. Arthur’s legal team, accompanied by the State Police. They have a perimeter sweep authorized. We have less than ten minutes before they breach the main gate."
