Chapter 8 - A New Blueprint

Six months later, Blackwell & Reed’s annual gala was in full swing.
The ballroom was a sea of silk, diamonds, and champagne. I stood near the balcony doors, watching the city lights reflect off the glass, wearing a dress that cost more than my first car. But I didn't feel out of place anymore.
"Mommy!"
I turned as Mia darted through the crowd of billionaires and socialites, wearing a miniature tuxedo jacket over her ruffled dress. She crashed into my legs, giggling. Adrian followed close behind her, adjusting his cuffs, a rare, genuine smile playing on his lips.
"She has successfully charmed the entire board of directors," Adrian reported, handing me a glass of sparkling water. "I think the CFO just offered her a job in acquisitions."
"She's a menace," I laughed, brushing a stray curl from Mia's forehead.
"She’s a Kane," Adrian corrected softly.
He looked at me, the city lights reflecting in his dark eyes. The lines of stress that used to age his face had softened. We had built something entirely new out of the ashes of Julian’s tragedy. We weren't just co-parents to a legacy; we were partners. The fear that had defined my twenties was gone, replaced by a fierce, unshakable trust in the man standing before me.
"Are you happy, Claire?" he asked, his voice dropping below the hum of the party.
I looked at Mia, who was currently trying to feed an hors d'oeuvre to Gerald the elephant on a nearby cocktail table. Then I looked at Adrian, the man who had torn down his own empire to keep us safe.
"For the first time in seven years," I said, stepping closer to him, "I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be."

Adrian reached out, his fingers gently brushing the silver locket resting against my collarbone—Julian's locket. He didn't pull away. Instead, he rested his hand briefly over mine.
"Good," he murmured. "Because we're just getting started."
