Chapter 2 - The Bloodline

"I did," Adrian said, his voice surprisingly steady for a man whose world had just tilted on its axis. "I knew him very well. He was my brother."
Mia’s eyes widened, the purple crayon slipping from her small fingers to roll across the expensive Persian rug. She looked at me, then back at Adrian. Her little mind worked furiously, piecing together the fragmented puzzle of her seven years of life.
"So..." she whispered, her brow furrowing in that exact way Julian used to when he was trying to read a difficult chord sheet. "That makes you my uncle?"
"It does," Adrian replied, not flinching.
The silence in the office was deafening. I held my breath, waiting for the inevitable crash of reality. This was the moment I had dreaded for thousands of sleepless nights. The Kane family was a dynasty, a monolithic empire of real estate and media built on cold calculations and ruthless acquisitions. And now, the sole heir to Julian Kane's portion of that legacy was sitting on a leather sofa, asking for crackers.
"Do you have a brother too?" Mia asked, completely oblivious to the gravity of the room.
"No," Adrian said softly. "Just Julian."
Mia hopped off the sofa, walking right up to him. She didn't have my fear. She hadn't spent four years avoiding eye contact with the CEO in the elevator. To her, this was just a very tall man in a very nice suit who happened to know her dad. She reached into her pocket, pulling out a slightly crushed packet of fruit snacks, and held it out to him.
"You can have these," she offered. "Since you're sad."
Adrian stared at the neon-colored gummy pack as if it were a priceless artifact. He took it delicately. "Thank you, Mia."
I stepped forward, unable to handle the emotional weight of the scene. "We should go, Adrian. It’s late, and you have... you need time to process this."
May you like
Adrian stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the room. The softness he had shown Mia vanished, replaced by the sharp, protective instincts of a Kane.
"You aren't going back to that apartment, Claire," he said, his tone leaving absolutely no room for debate. "The moment someone in this building leaks that you were in my office with a child who looks exactly like my deceased brother, my father’s people will be at your door. You are coming with me."
