Chapter 6 - The Checkmate

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. The kind of silence that precedes a detonation.

Elias’s hands hovered over the envelope, trembling slightly. The untouchable patriarch was suddenly looking at the very real possibility of federal prison.

"You would betray your own father?" Elias whispered, venom dripping from every word. "You would destroy the family name for a woman you barely know?"

"I am saving the family name," Adrian corrected, his posture unyielding. "Julian walked away because he couldn't stomach your corruption. I stayed because I thought I could fix it from the inside. But I won't let you infect the next generation. Mia is innocent."

I watched Adrian, stunned by the magnitude of what he was sacrificing. He was holding a gun to his own empire to protect my daughter.

"Here are my terms," Adrian continued, his voice echoing in the vast room. "You will step down as Chairman of the Board, citing health reasons. You will place your voting shares into a blind trust, which I will control. In exchange, this audit never sees the light of the DOJ, and you get to occasionally play the role of the doting grandfather at supervised holiday dinners. If you threaten Claire, if you attempt to file for custody, or if you even look at a lawyer, I will ruin you."

Elias sank back into his chair, looking suddenly frail and incredibly old. The fight drained out of him, replaced by the bitter realization of defeat. He looked at me, then at Mia, who was peeking out from behind my coat.

"She has his eyes," Elias muttered, almost to himself.

"Yes, she does," Adrian said. "And she will have his freedom."

Adrian placed his hand gently on the small of my back. "We're done here. Let's go home, Claire."

As we walked out of the boardroom, my legs felt like jelly, but my head was held high. For seven years, I had run from the ghost of the Kane family. Now, I was walking out of their fortress, protected by the very man I had feared most.
