Chapter 12 - Bloodline and Betrayal

The private jet banked sharply over the dark waters of Lake Champlain, the twin engines humming with a low, constant vibration that failed to soothe the terror in my veins.

Mia was curled up in the plush leather seat next to me, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sound asleep thanks to the sheer exhaustion of being woken up at three in the morning. She didn't know about the man on the terrace. She didn't know that her grandfather was sending mercenaries to steal a strand of her hair or a swab of her saliva to use in a high-stakes legal ambush. To her, this was an impromptu adventure to "Uncle Adrian’s secret cabin."

Across the aisle, Adrian was on a secure satellite phone, his voice clipped and furious.

"I want the building security team fired by morning," Adrian barked into the receiver. "Every guard on that shift is to be investigated by outside forensics. Elias couldn't have bypassed the biometric terrace locks without an insider feeding him the override codes. Find the leak, Marcus. And when you find him, ruin him."

He ended the call with a violent snap, rubbing the bridge of his nose. The cabin we were flying toward was an off-the-grid estate in upstate New York, purchased by Adrian under a dummy corporation years ago for situations precisely like this.

"Adrian," I said quietly, careful not to wake Mia. "How long can we keep running? This isn't a life for her."

Adrian looked at me, the harsh cabin lights highlighting the exhaustion etched into his features. "We aren't running, Claire. We are repositioning. In New York, my father controls the geography. Up here, on private ground with dedicated private security, he has no reach."

"And what happens when Vanguard files their petition with the courts?" I challenged. "We can't hide in the woods while they strip Mia of her name and take over Blackwell & Reed."

"They won't file," Adrian said, his voice turning cold as ice. "Because before the market opens at nine-thirty tomorrow morning, I am releasing the full, unredacted records of Elias Kane's offshore accounts directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the SEC, and the New York Attorney General."

My eyes widened. "You said that would destroy the entire Kane Foundation. It will tank the company's stock value by forty percent!"

"Let it burn," Adrian said, leaning forward until his face was inches from mine. "I spent my entire adult life protecting that company because I thought it was Julian’s birthright. But Julian didn't care about the money, Claire. He cared about you. And if burning the Kane empire to the ground is the only way to keep you and Mia safe from my father, I will strike the match myself."

The raw intensity in his voice stole the air from my lungs. This wasn't just corporate strategy anymore. This wasn't just duty to his dead brother. The way Adrian looked at me—the fierce, unyielding devotion in his eyes—was something entirely different. Something profound and terrifying in its power.

"Why are you doing this for us?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "You could have stayed out of this. You could have let me take Mia and disappear four years ago."

Adrian reached out, his hand covering mine where it rested on the armrest. His fingers tightened around mine, warm and solid.

"Because the day you walked into Blackwell & Reed four years ago," Adrian murmured, his eyes searching mine with a vulnerability he had never shown anyone, "I knew exactly who you were. I knew you were the woman Julian loved. And I swore to myself that I would spend the rest of my life making sure no harm ever came to you again."

I stared at him in stunned disbelief. "You... you knew who I was the whole time?"

"From the very first interview," Adrian admitted softly. "And every day for four years, watching you struggle alone with Mia while pretending not to know you was the hardest thing I’ve ever done."
