Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Showdown

Z

Two weeks later, the final phase of the corporate storm arrived.

I stood at the head of the massive boardroom table on the 50th floor of Sterling & Croft's corporate headquarters. Seated around the polished oak table were the firm's Executive Board, senior managing partners, external legal counsel, and representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

At the far end of the table sat Arthur Pendelton.

For weeks, Arthur had presented himself as the impartial, high-minded director protecting the firm’s integrity. But as I had dug deeper into the audit trails of Montgomery & Vance Real Estate, I had uncovered one final, devastating truth that linked my father’s crimes directly to the very room I was standing in.

"Thank you all for convening," I began, pressing a button on the presentation remote. A high-resolution organizational chart expanded across the primary projection screen.

"Over the past month, I have conducted a comprehensive forensic audit of the transactions executed by R&S Holding Group and Apex Capital," I declared, my voice echoing with crisp authority. "While the criminal investigation into Richard Montgomery and Julian Cross is well underway, one crucial question remained unanswered: How did a small real estate firm manage to bypass Sterling & Croft’s mandatory risk-compliance filters for eighteen months?"

Arthur Pendelton cleared his throat loudly, leaning forward with a tight, nervous frown. "Skyla, we are all aware of your personal family tragedy. But this board meeting was called to discuss firm compliance, not to rehash your father's criminal indictment."

"I am discussing firm compliance, Arthur," I said, staring directly at him. I clicked the remote.

A new financial diagram appeared on the screen, highlighting a series of wire transfers originating from M.M. Global Luxe LLC and terminating in an offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands registered under the name Pendelton Holdings LLC.

Gasps erupted around the table. The Managing Partner turned his head sharply to glare at Arthur.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur slammed his hands onto the table, standing up, his face flushing deep red. "This is outrageous slander! I demand you turn that screen off!"

"Between March 2022 and October 2024," I stated calmly, ignoring his outburst, "Arthur Pendelton received monthly advisory payments totaling six hundred and fifty thousand dollars from Julian Cross. In exchange for these payments, Mr. Pendelton personally altered Sterling & Croft's risk-assessment reports regarding my father's firm, allowing fraudulent real estate valuations to pass internal audit unchecked."

I turned to the SEC representatives seated at the table. "I have submitted the digital forensic logs, cryptographically signed by independent servers, directly to federal authorities ten minutes ago."

Arthur’s legs seemed to give out beneath him. He sank back into his leather chair, his face ghostly pale, staring at the screen in utter horror.

"Arthur," the Managing Partner said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with fury. "Step out of this room immediately. Security will escort you to your office to pack your personal belongings. You are terminated effective immediately, pending federal criminal investigation."

Arthur didn't say a word. He slowly rose, looking at me with a mixture of shock and utter disbelief. The quiet, practical auditor he had tried to intimidate weeks ago had just brought down the executive director of the firm.

As Arthur walked out under security escort, the Managing Partner stood up and walked over to me. He extended his hand.

"Skyla," he said, looking at me with immense professional respect. "You uncovered a level of corruption that could have destroyed this entire firm if it had come to light during an external federal probe. Your integrity, courage, and unmatched auditing skills saved Sterling & Croft."

"I was just doing my job," I said, shaking his hand firmly.

May you like

"No," he corrected with a warm smile. "You were doing what is right. As of today, the board would like to officially offer you the position of Director of Forensic Auditing."

I smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that reached my eyes for the first time in years. "I accept."
