Chapter 11 - The Price of Freedom

November returned to Seattle, bringing with it a cool, crisp autumn breeze and the rich, golden colors of fall.

I stood in the kitchen of my brand-new penthouse condo overlooking the shimmering waters of Puget Sound. Sunlight poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating sleek minimalist decor, lush green house plants, and a bustling dining table set for six.

It was Thanksgiving Day.

My apartment smelled divine—roasted turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, fresh sourdough bread, and, sitting proudly in the center of the kitchen counter, a homemade pumpkin pie made completely from scratch.

The doorbell rang.

I wiped my hands on my apron and walked over to open the door. Standing outside were Cousin Lauren, her husband, and three of my closest friends from Sterling & Croft—people who had stood by me, supported me, and proven what true loyalty looked like.

"Happy Thanksgiving!" Lauren cheered, stepping inside and wrapping me in a warm, tight hug. "Oh my gosh, Skyla, this place is incredible!"

"Welcome," I laughed, taking her coat and hanging it up in the entryway closet. "Come on in, everything is almost ready."

Lauren walked over to the dining table, looking at the breathtaking view of the bay. She turned back to me, her eyes filled with genuine affection and respect. "I heard about your promotion last week. Director of Forensic Operations for the entire West Coast region! We are all so proud of you, Skyla."

"Thank you, Lauren," I said, handing her a glass of sparkling cider. "It feels good to build something that is entirely my own."

We gathered around the dining table an hour later. The laughter was loud, warm, and authentic. There were no hidden resentments, no condescending comments masked as praise, no golden children demanding the spotlight, and no debt hanging like a shadow over the meal.

For the first time in my entire life, I wasn't the quiet, overlooked auditor sitting in the shadow of someone else's fake success. I was the master of my own destiny, surrounded by people who valued me for who I truly was.

When it came time for dessert, I sliced into the pumpkin pie and served a slice to everyone at the table.

Lauren took a bite and smiled broadly. "Skyla, this is literally the best pumpkin pie I’ve ever had. How do you make it so perfect?"

I raised my wine glass, catching my reflection in the dark glass of the window—strong, radiant, and entirely unshakeable.

"It’s all about getting the numbers right," I said with a soft, knowing smile. "And making sure you only keep what is truly worth holding onto."

We clinked our glasses together under the warm light of my new home, welcoming a future built on truth, strength, and freedom.
