Chapter 8 - Fractured Dynasties

The arrest of Richard Montgomery at the Fairmont Gala sent shockwaves through Seattle's financial and social circles. By Monday morning, the local business journals were carrying front-page headlines: PROMINENT REAL ESTATE PARTNER ARRESTED FOR IDENTITY THEFT AND MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.
I sat in the conference room of Marcus Vance’s law firm. Sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating stacks of official bank records, affidavit statements, and forensic evidence that we had compiled over the weekend.
"The civil lawsuit and the criminal charges against your father have completely shattered their defense strategy," Marcus explained, sliding a legal brief across the table. "Once the police saw the forensic signature analysis proving your father forged your handwriting on the Apex Capital loan, the prosecutor dropped any suspicion of your involvement in R&S Holding Group. You are officially cleared of all criminal liability, Skyla."
A massive weight, one I had been carrying for weeks, lifted off my chest. "What about Marissa?"
"That’s where things get even more dramatic," Marcus replied with a grim smile. "Julian Cross was apprehended by federal marshals late last night while attempting to board a private yacht in San Diego bound for Mexico. In exchange for a plea deal, Cross turned over all his digital communications."
Marcus clicked his laptop screen, displaying a series of text messages retrieved from Julian Cross’s phone.
MARISSA: "My sister is an auditor, she’s so stupid and clueless. Just put her SSN on the credit line application, she never checks her secondary credit bureaus."
JULIAN: "If your dad signs as co-signer, it’ll clear automated underwriting in an hour."
MARISSA: "Do it. She owes us anyway."
I stared at the screen, a cold numbness creeping through my veins. Reading her actual words—seeing the sheer, unadulterated malice with which my sister had engineered my financial destruction—extinguished the last lingering traces of guilt I felt for taking legal action.
"Marissa has been named as a co-conspirator in federal wire fraud," Marcus informed me. "An arrest warrant was issued for her an hour ago."
Before I could process the news, Marcus’s assistant knocked on the glass door. "Marcus, there’s a woman in the lobby demanding to see Skyla. She’s... extremely agitated."
I stood up. "Is it my mother?"
"Yes."
I walked out to the reception area. Mom was standing near the glass doors, looking entirely broken. Her designer coat was wrinkled, her makeup undone, her eyes swollen from days of continuous crying. Gone was the immaculate, haughty matriarch who ruled Thanksgiving dinner under the crystal chandelier.
"Skyla," she gasped, rushing toward me with open arms. "Oh, thank God, Skyla, please!"
I stepped back, keeping a wooden coffee table between us. "Do not come near me, Mom."
"Skyla, you have to help us!" she pleaded, collapsing onto a leather sofa, clutching her handbag like a lifeline. "The bank is foreclosing on the house! They froze all our accounts! Your father is sitting in a holding cell, and now... now the police are looking for Marissa! They say she’s going to prison!"
"She committed wire fraud, Mom," I said, my voice steady and unyielding. "She collaborated with Julian Cross to steal my identity and launder money."
"She didn't mean it!" Mom cried frantically. "She’s your sister! She was young and desperate! You have to go to the prosecutor and drop the charges! Tell them it was all a big family misunderstanding!"
"I am not dropping anything," I said firmly. "Marissa stood in my office and called me nothing. She stood at your dinner table and humiliated me while you smiled and cheered her on. You enabled her, Mom. You sacrificed my entire life, my money, and my safety to feed her ego."
"I am your mother!" she screamed, her voice echoing through the quiet law office. "How can you be so cold?! Where is your heart?!"
May you like
"My heart was broken a long time ago," I replied quietly. "By the parents who loved a golden lie more than their honest daughter. I am done being your sacrifice."
I turned to the security guard standing in the lobby. "Please escort her out of the building."
