Chapter 4 - The Escalation

Z

By Monday morning, the corporate headquarters of Sterling & Croft Audit Group in downtown Seattle was buzzing with activity. Rain drummed heavily against the glass exterior of the 40th floor, matching the storm raging inside my mind. I sat at my desk, surrounded by high-resolution monitors displaying complex ledger spreadsheets, but my focus was shattered.

I had given my parents until 9:00 AM to present a formal written plan to refinance the fraudulent loans. It was now 10:15 AM, and my phone had been silent since Sunday night.

They thought I was bluffing. They believed that years of conditioning—of being the dutiful, compliant, self-sacrificing daughter—would keep me from taking real action.

I opened an official complaint draft on my laptop, addressed to the Financial Crimes Division of the Seattle Police Department and the FTC. My fingers hovered over the keyboard. If I pressed send, my father would face felony identity theft charges. The family structure would be irrevocably destroyed. But if I stayed silent, I would be legally bound to $270,000 worth of debt that would bankrupt me the moment Marissa inevitably defaulted.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the 40th-floor lobby swung open.

"I don't care if she's in a meeting! I am her sister!"

The sharp, echoing click of high heels sounded down the marble hallway. I snapped my laptop screen down just as Marissa burst into the open-plan accounting floor.

She looked terrifyingly chaotic. The pristine facade she usually maintained was cracked; her mascara was slightly smudged, her hair pulled back into a hasty bun, and her eyes bloodshot. She was wearing a red trench coat, clutching a thick paper folder in her manicured hand.

Two security guards followed closely behind her, looking frantic. "Miss, you cannot be back here! This is a restricted financial facility!"

"Skyla!" Marissa screamed, ignoring the security guards entirely as every auditor, analyst, and senior manager on the floor turned to look. "You absolute psychotic monster!"

I stood up slowly from my desk, maintaining an air of cold, professional composure despite the thunderous pounding in my chest. "Marissa, leave this building immediately. You are committing criminal trespass."

"You ruined my life!" she shrieked, slamming her folder down onto my desk so hard that my coffee mug rattled. "My credit cards were declined this morning! My landlord called because my rent check bounced! All because you canceled those auto-transfers like a vindictive, jealous little bitch!"

Murmurs rippled through the office. I caught sight of my executive director, Arthur Pendelton, standing outside his glass corner office, observing the scene with a cold, unreadable glare.

"You didn't pay for your rent, Marissa. I did," I said, keeping my voice dangerously low and smooth. "And I am under no legal or moral obligation to fund your lifestyle."

"You owed me!" Marissa yelled, stepping directly into my personal space, pointing a shaking finger inches from my face. "Mom and Dad gave you everything! They paid for your boring state college degree while I worked to build a real brand! And now you're threatening to put Dad in prison over a stupid paperwork technicality?!"

"Identity fraud is not a technicality," I countered, leaning forward until I was eye-to-eye with her. "Dad forged my signature for two hundred and seventy thousand dollars to bail out your fake company. That is a federal crime."

"He did it to save me!" she roared. "Because I actually have a future! What do you have, Skyla? You sit in a grey cubicle all day pushing numbers around! You have no life, no partner, no talent! You're nothing without this family, and you know it!"

Before I could reply, Arthur Pendelton’s booming voice cut through the room like a whip.

"That is quite enough."

Arthur walked slowly down the aisle, his tailored suit immaculate, his silver hair neatly combed. The authority he projected instantly silenced the entire floor.

"Miss Montgomery," Arthur said, addressing Marissa with icy precision. "This is a private financial audit firm handling multi-billion-dollar corporate portfolios. You are currently disrupting operations and uttering threats on private property." He turned to the security guards. "Escort this woman out of the building. If she steps foot on our property again, have her arrested immediately."

"You can't touch me!" Marissa snarled as the two security officers took her by the arms. She thrashed against their grip, glaring at me with pure hatred as they dragged her toward the elevators. "You're going to pay for this, Skyla! I will make sure Mom and Dad disown you completely! You'll have nobody left!"

The heavy elevator doors slid shut, cutting off her hysterical voice.

Silence hung thick over the entire office floor. Dozens of my coworkers were staring at me. I stood straight, adjusting the collar of my blouse, refusing to let them see me break.

"Skyla," Arthur said softly, his voice sharp as a razor. "My office. Now."
