Chapter 2

Chapter 2 - WHISPERS IN THE HALLWAYThe days following the incident were an exercise in psychological warfare. The Miller estate felt less like a home and more like a high-security prison where the guards wore cashmere and spoke in hushed, polite tones. Clara spent most of her time confined to the eastern wing, her only company being the heavy thumping of her own heart and the occasional judgmental glance from the house staff, who had been thoroughly trained by Eleanor to treat her like a temporary guest.Every evening, the routine remained terrifyingly unchanged. From the balcony of her bedroom, Clara could hear the heavy front doors open, announcing Ethan’s return. And like clockwork, Eleanor would meet him in the grand foyer. Clara would creep toward the top of the stairs, hiding behind the thick mahogany pillars, watching and listening.

"She hasn't left her room all day, Ethan," Eleanor would say, her voice carrying up the staircase with calculated precision. "The maids say she barely touched her lunch. She is acting like a martyr, trying to make you feel guilty for a completely justified correction. A weak woman makes a weak home, my son. You must maintain control, especially now that the Miller heir is on the way."

Ethan’s face would darken with every word, his mother's praise or criticism acting as the thermostat for his rage. "I am in control, Mother," Ethan would reply, pouring himself a glass of scotch. "If she thinks she can manipulate me with tears, she has another thing coming."

Clara clutched her stomach behind the pillar, realizing with absolute certainty that there was no saving this marriage. Eleanor didn't just want a compliant daughter-in-law; she wanted an entirely broken shell that she could discard once the baby was born. The trap was closing fast, and Clara knew her time was running out.
