Zero nine

Chapter 7 - The Price of Legacy

Z

Three weeks later, the gray clouds over the city had finally given way to a bright, crisp autumn morning.

The headlines had changed. MORETTI EMPIRE UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOLLOWING ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE. Vanessa and four high-ranking members of her father's syndicate were behind bars, facing charges ranging from conspiracy to grand larceny.

My small apartment was quiet. The radiator near the window was no longer clicking—it had been completely replaced with a sleek, modern heating unit that kept the room comfortably warm. My student loan balance read zero on my laptop screen.

A heavy knock came at the door.

I opened it to find Dante standing in the hallway. He wore a simple black coat and jeans, looking less like a mafia Don and more like the man I had pulled from the muddy ravine three weeks ago.

"You're late," I said, stepping aside to let him in.

"Luca had opinions about my route," Dante said, stepping into the warm room. He held a brown paper bag from the local bakery downtown. "I brought croissants."

"Trying to buy my affection with carbohydrates?" I joked, taking the bag from him and setting it on the counter.

"Is it working?"

"Iteratively," I replied, smiling as I poured two mugs of fresh coffee.

Dante walked over to the window, looking out over the city streets below. "The board signed the dissolution papers this morning," he said quietly, his tone turning serious. "The Moretti enterprise is officially legitimate. We sold off the shipping lines and closed the private clubs. It's done."

I walked over to stand beside him, handing him a mug. "How does it feel?"

"Quiet," Dante admitted, looking down into the dark liquid. "For the first time in my life, nobody is trying to kill me, and nobody is expecting me to rule an empire."

"Sounds boring," I murmured.

Dante turned to look at me, his dark eyes soft. "It would be, if I were alone."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. My heart did a sudden, chaotic flip.

"Dante..."

"Relax," he said with a low chuckle, opening the box. Inside wasn't a ring, but a small, silver key attached to a leather keychain bearing a single word: BELLINI’S.

I stared at it, confused. "The restaurant?"

"I bought it," Dante said simply. "The previous owner was eager to retire after the press circus. The manager was fired for taking bribes from Vanessa's people. It needs a new owner. Someone who knows how the place runs, someone who knows how to treat people... and someone who knows how to keep secrets."

I looked from the key to his face, stunned. "You bought me a restaurant?"

"I didn't buy it for you as a gift, Cara," Dante said gently, taking my hand in his. "I bought it as an investment. You are going to run it. No more late shifts for terrible tips. No more broken radiators. You build the life you want, on your own terms."

"And what about you?" I asked, my voice soft. "What are you going to do?"

Dante looked at me, his fingers tightening around mine. "I'm going to be the guy who sits at the corner table every night, ordering terrible espresso, just to watch the woman who saved my life run the world."

I looked at the silver key resting in the velvet box, then back up at the man standing in front of me. The rain, the blood, the storm on the mountain—it had all led to this quiet morning in a warm apartment.

"You're going to have to pay for that espresso," I said, a smile breaking across my face.

May you like

Dante laughed—a real, booming laugh that filled the quiet room—and pulled me into his arms.

"Deal," he whispered, pressing his lips to mine as the sun finally broke through the gray clouds outside, illuminating the new world we had built from the ashes of the old one.
