Chapter 13 - Trial by Fire

A deafening ROAR shook the foundations of the estate as the gas ignited.
The shockwave blasted through the hallway, blowing out the glass doors of the conservatory and sending a shower of sparkling shards crashing into the foyer. Orange flames erupted into the night sky, illuminating the dark mansion in a violent, flickering glow.
Shouts and curses echoed from the study.
"What the hell was that?!" one of Luca's men yelled.
"The heating line blew!" another screamed. "The whole east wing is catching!"
I pressed myself flat against the back of a leather sofa in the formal living room, watching through the shadows as Luca and his two men rushed out of the study, handguns drawn, heading toward the blazing hallway leading to the conservatory.
"Check the perimeter!" Luca ordered, his voice tight with panic for the first time. "Someone's on the grounds!"
The moment their footsteps faded down the hall, I broke cover.
I ran into the study, the air thick with smoke drifting in from the corridor. I vaulted over the overturned mahogany chair and scrambled onto the marble mantelpiece below the painting of the harbor.
My fingers dug into the heavy gold-leaf frame. I pulled with all my weight, my feet slipping on the slick marble.
The heavy frame shifted, unhooking from the wall with a loud screech of metal. It tipped forward, almost crushing me, before I caught it against my shoulder and lowered it onto the desk.
I tore through the canvas backing with my fingers, ripping open the aged linen.
Inside the hollow wooden frame sat a small, black leather notebook filled with handwritten numbers, dates, and account codes—along with a silver USB drive taped to the inside cover.
The physical ledger. The absolute, undeniable proof of every illegal transaction Luca had conducted under the Moretti name for thirty years.
"You really are a persistent girl, Miss Fields."
I froze.
Luca stood in the doorway of the study, framed by the roaring orange flames consuming the hallway behind him. His coat was singed, his face covered in soot, and his handgun was pointed directly at my head.
His eyes fell on the black ledger in my hands, and a cold, murderous smile spread across his face.
"Dante taught you well," Luca said quietly, stepping into the room. The smoke was getting thicker, stinging my eyes and filling my lungs with a bitter ash. "He always did have a soft spot for tragic figures. But you're in way over your head, Cara."
"The feds already know about the Panama transfer, Luca!" I shouted, holding the ledger tight against my chest. "When they see this, they'll know you were the one running the syndicate all along! You used Dante as a shield!"
"And he served his purpose beautifully," Luca said, raising the gun until the sights lined up with my forehead. "Drop the book, Cara. Or I swear to God, I'll leave your body in this room and let the fire consume us all."
I looked at the window behind the desk—a massive floor-to-ceiling glass panel overlooking the steep drop toward the lake below.
"You know what I learned from saving Dante?" I whispered, my voice calm, almost detached from the terror raging inside me.
Luca's brow furrowed slightly. "What?"
May you like
"Sometimes," I said, stepping back onto the edge of the desk, "you just have to jump."
I slammed my heel into the glass window with all the force left in my body.
