Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Vanessa turned slowly to face Dante, her face contorting into a mask of pure rage. "You're bluffing. You don't have an audio recording."

"I didn't," Dante said, stepping closer, ignoring the gun held by one of her guards. "But Miss Fields has a very good memory. And Bellini's security system records high-definition audio in all private dining areas—a safety measure implemented after an incident three years ago. Luca retrieved the files twenty minutes ago."

Vanessa looked back at me, realization hitting her like a physical blow. The booth at Bellini's wasn't just private; it was monitored.

"You ruined everything," she spat at me, her voice trembling with hatred. "You stupid, insignificant little cockroach!"

She reached into her coat, pulling a small silver pistol from her pocket.

BANG.

The gunshot echoed deafeningly in the enclosed vault.

I squeezed my eyes shut, expecting the pain, but instead, I heard a heavy thud on the floor. When I opened my eyes, Vanessa's guard was on the ground, and Dante was already across the room. He slammed Vanessa against the concrete wall, twisting her wrist until the silver gun clattered to the floor.

"Touch her again," Dante whispered, his voice low and deadly, "and I won't care about the board, the law, or the family name."

Vanessa gasped for air, her sleek hair falling into her eyes as Dante held her pinned. "You love her," she laughed hysterically, a bitter, broken sound. "You don't even know her, and you're willing to tear down everything we built for a waitress!"

"I'm tearing it down because you turned it into a circus," Dante said coldly. He looked at Luca. "Take her upstairs. Hand her over to the federal agents waiting at the gate."

"Federal agents?" Vanessa gasped. "You went to the feds?!"

"They've been waiting for a reason to take down your father's syndicate for ten years," Dante replied, releasing her with disgust. "You just gave them the evidence on a silver platter."

Luca stepped forward, cuffing Vanessa's hands behind her back with quick efficiency. As they dragged her out of the vault, her screams echoed up the stone staircase until they finally faded into the distance.

The vault went quiet again, except for the rhythmic hum of the server racks and my own ragged breathing.

I lowered the heavy pistol, my hands shaking so badly that the metal banged against the console. I sank onto a steel stool, my energy completely spent.

Dante walked over to me. He took the gun gently from my trembling hands, engaged the safety, and set it on the desk. Then, without saying a word, he pulled me up from the stool and wrapped his arms around me.

I froze for a second, overwhelmed by the warmth of his chest and the smell of gunpowder and rain clinging to his coat. Then, all the tension of the last twenty-four hours snapped. I leaned into him, burying my face in his shoulder, and let out a shaky breath.

"It's over," he murmured, his hand resting on the back of my head, holding me tight. "It's finished, Cara."

"I almost shot her," I whispered, my voice muffled against his shirt.

"You defended yourself," Dante said, pulling back slightly to look at me. His face was bruised, a small cut bleeding near his cheekbone, but his dark eyes were clearer than I had ever seen them. "You're the strongest person I've ever met."

"I'm terrified," I admitted, laughing weakly through a sudden tear. "I'm just a waitress."

"Not anymore," Dante said softly, his fingers gently wiping a tear from my cheek. "You're the woman who saved my life. Twice."

He leaned in, his lips brushing against mine in a kiss that was slow, intense, and filled with a relief so deep it felt like breathing air after hours underwater. For a moment, the blood, the guns, and the mafia didn't exist. There was only the heat of his mouth and the steady beat of his heart beneath my palm.

When he finally pulled back, he looked at me with an intensity that made my breath catch.

"What now?" I asked quietly.

"Now," Dante said, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips, "we go fix your radiator."
