Chapter 14 - The Rebirth

The reinforced glass shattered with a sound like thunder, giving way under my weight.
I threw myself backward out into the cold night air, gripping the black ledger against my chest as I plunged thirty feet down toward the dark, freezing waters of the lake below.
SPLASH.
The ice-cold water hit me like a physical wall, knocking the wind from my lungs and plunging me into absolute darkness. The freezing lake swirled around me, heavy and suffocating, pulling me down toward the muddy bottom.
Fight! my brain screamed. Fight for him!
I kicked wildly with my legs, my arms slicing through the freezing water, holding the leather notebook tight against my ribs. I broke the surface, gasping for air, coughing violently as the cold wind whipped across my wet face.
Above me, the Blackwood estate was a towering inferno, orange flames licking the midnight sky. A single figure stood at the shattered window of the study, looking down into the dark water.
Luca.
Sirens wailed in the distance—dozens of them, their red and blue lights flashing through the trees as a convoy of federal vehicles and police cruisers smashed through the iron gates of the estate.
Agent Vance hadn't just followed Dante's trail; he had followed the ping from my phone after I called Vanessa.
I dragged myself out of the freezing water onto the muddy bank, shivering so violently my teeth chattered against each other. I collapsed onto the grass, clutching the wet ledger in my frozen hands as armed officers swarmed the grounds above me.
Three days later.
The morning sun shone bright and clear through the windows of the federal courthouse downtown.
I sat on a wooden bench in the hallway outside Courtroom 4, wrapped in a warm wool coat, holding a paper cup of warm tea. My bandaged hand had finally healed, though a faint scar remained across my palm—a permanent reminder of the mountain, the fire, and the man who had changed my life forever.
The heavy double doors of the courtroom swung open.
Dante stepped out, wearing a sharp grey suit. Beside him, Agent Vance closed his briefcase with a crisp, final click, offering Dante a tense, reluctant nod of respect before walking away down the corridor.
Luca had been taken into custody at the scene, along with all the physical evidence retrieved from the lake. The charges against Dante had been dropped entirely. The Moretti name was officially clear.
Dante walked down the hallway toward me. He didn't look like a mob boss, and he didn't look like a victim. He looked like a man who had finally step out from the dark into the blinding light of freedom.
He stopped in front of me, looking down at me with an intensity that made the rest of the busy courthouse fade into white noise.
"You ruined your shoe again," Dante said softly, pointing down at my muddy leather boots.
I let out a soft laugh, tears prickling the corners of my eyes. "I think you owe me a new pair. And a new restaurant."
Dante crouched down in front of my bench, taking my bandaged hand in his warm palms. He pressed his forehead against mine, his breath warm against my skin.
"Bellini's is already being rebuilt," Dante whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. "And this time, there are no private booths. No secret ledgers. No shadows."
"Just espresso?" I asked softly, smiling through my tears.
May you like
"Just espresso," Dante agreed, pulling me into a deep, desperate kiss that tasted of freedom, redemption, and the unbreakable bond forged in the dark. "And a waitress who taught me how to live."
I wrapped my arms around his neck, holding him tight, knowing that whatever storms lay ahead, we would face them together—no longer running from the past, but building a future from the ashes of the empire we had left behind.
