Chapter 9 - A Final Desperate Play

The phone nearly slipped from my hand as Sarah’s words echoed through the speaker. The ocean breeze suddenly felt icy against my skin, and the bright summer sunshine lost all its warmth.
"My family?" I gasped, my voice barely a whisper. "Sarah, what are you talking about? I'm an only child! My parents passed away when I was twenty!"
"I'm looking at the original birth index from the upstate clinic right now, Claire," Sarah stated, the sound of paper shuffling coming through the line. "Your mother, Victoria Montgomery, was a patient at Harold Vance’s private facility in the autumn of 1993, eight months before you were born."
I backed away from the deck railing, my mind spinning into complete vertigo. Adrian saw the sudden terror in my eyes and immediately stepped toward me, putting a steadying arm around my waist.
"Claire, what is it?" Adrian asked, his brow furrowed with deep concern. "What did Sarah say?"
"Sarah... read me the file number," I managed to say into the phone, my voice shaking uncontrollably.
"It’s registered under Patient File #412," Sarah replied. "The child was born on May 14th, 1994. Claire... that's your exact date of birth."
The world seemed to stop turning. Every memory of my childhood—my loving, quiet mother, my stern father who had died of heart disease when I was in college, the comfortable family home in Connecticut—suddenly felt like a painted set on a stage that was being ripped down around me.
"My mother couldn't conceive naturally either," I whispered, the horrifying truth dawning on me. "She went to Harold Vance... just like Ethan’s mother did."
"It means you and Ethan didn't meet by accident, Claire," Sarah revealed, her tone heavy with grim realization. "Ethan’s father, Harrison, tracked you down when you were in university. He knew who your mother was. He deliberately orchestrated your meeting with Ethan at the charity gala six years ago."
I pulled the phone away from my ear, staring at the screen in absolute horror. The entire trajectory of my adult life—my romance with Ethan, our marriage, our shared business ventures, even the horrifying fertility treatments—wasn't just a tragic series of unfortunate events. It was a pre-meditated, calculated breeding experiment designed by the Vance family to combine two subjects created by Harold Vance’s secret genetic research thirty years prior.
Ethan hadn't known. He was just a pawn in his father’s sick, twisted legacy game. Harrison had arranged our marriage, hoping that two children born from Project Alpha would successfully reproduce, proving his brother’s insane genetic theories right and securing the ultimate corporate legacy for the Vance dynasty.
"Claire?" Adrian’s voice brought me back from the brink of total panic. He was holding both of my hands now, his eyes fixed on mine with intense concern. "Claire, talk to me. What is happening?"
"I... I was created by Harold Vance too," I choked out, tears spilling down my face as the ground gave way beneath me once again. "My entire marriage... my whole life with Ethan... it was engineered by Harrison Vance from the very beginning."
Adrian stared at me in profound shock, his hands tightening around mine. "My God..."
Before either of us could process the sickening revelation, a dark sedan pulled violently up the long gravel driveway of the Hamptons estate, screeching to a halt right in front of the main entrance.
The driver's door burst open, and a man stepped out into the bright afternoon sun. He wore a dark, tailored suit, but his tie was loosened, his hair was messy, and his eyes possessed a wild, unhinged intensity.
It was Dr. Julian Ross—the fertility specialist who had fathered Madison’s baby, the man who had administered my experimental injections under Harold Vance’s orders.
"Claire!" Julian shouted, marching aggressively up the stone steps toward the deck, holding a black leather briefcase tight against his chest. "I know you're here! You need to listen to me right now!"
Adrian immediately stepped between me and Julian, his posture turning defensive and rigid. "Ross! Stop right there! The police are looking for you! You were named as a co-conspirator in the federal indictment this morning!"
"I don't give a damn about the indictment!" Julian screamed, stopping at the top of the deck steps, his chest heaving, sweat glistening on his pale forehead. "You don't understand what Harold Vance put in those files, Vale! You don't understand what he was trying to do!"
"Get off this property before I call the state police," Adrian warned, pulling his phone from his pocket.
"If you call the police, Claire dies!" Julian yelled, pointing a trembling finger directly at me.
I froze, looking past Adrian at the frantic doctor. "What are you talking about, Julian?"
May you like
Julian opened his leather briefcase with shaking hands, pulling out a thick, leather-bound medical journal marked with the official seal of the Zurich Biotech Institute.
"The synthetic hormones Harold ordered me to inject into you over the last four years," Julian confessed, his voice cracking with sheer desperation. "They weren't just meant to test ovulation suppression, Claire! They were designed to activate latent synthetic genetic markers Harold implanted in you when you were an embryo! It’s a slow-acting autoimmune reaction! If you don't receive the neutralizing compound within sixty days of your last injection, your immune system will destroy your cellular tissue from the inside out!"
