Zero nine

Chapter 2 - The Fragile Facade

The hallway of St. Catherine’s Hospital felt as though all the air had been sucked out of it, leaving behind a cold, sterile vacuum. The steady, rhythmic hum of medical monitors in distant rooms became the only sound framing the absolute silence that followed Adrian’s declaration.

Ethan stood frozen, his posture rigid, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. The smug, condescending smile that had defined his face for the last twelve months vanished entirely, replaced by a ghastly paleness that started at his jaw and spread to his temples. He stared at Madison, whose back was pressed flat against the cold white wall, her hands trembling so violently around her child that the poor boy whimpered in his sleep.

"What did he just say?" Ethan’s voice was dangerously low, a harsh whisper vibrating with raw hostility. He didn't look at Adrian. He didn't look at me. His bloodshot eyes were locked exclusively on Madison. "Madison... what the hell did he just say?"

"Ethan, please—" Madison choked out, her voice breaking into sob-laced gasps. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her mascara and running down her pale cheeks. "He’s lying! He’s playing mind games! Claire paid him to say that! You know how doctors are, they can fake anything if you give them enough money—"

"I don't fake DNA reports, Mrs. Vance," Adrian said calmly, his tone precise, professional, and entirely unbothered by her frantic accusations. He adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses and tapped the official blue seal at the bottom of the paper visible through the transparent window of the hospital envelope. "The genetic markers were analyzed by an independent state laboratory under court order three days ago. The court-certified findings are unequivocal. Mr. Vance possesses zero paternal genetic markers matching this child."

Ethan took a heavy step toward Madison. The authority he usually projected crumbled, replaced by the wild, desperate rage of a man realizing his entire reality was a carefully constructed illusion. "Who is the father, Madison?"

"Ethan, don't do this here!" she pleaded, cast a panicked look toward the two security guards standing at the end of the hall and the nurses who were now unashamedly staring from behind the nursing station desk. "We are in public! Think about our reputation! Think about the foundation!"

"To hell with the foundation!" Ethan roared, his voice echoing off the tile floors and ringing down the entire floor of the maternity ward. "Who is the father?!"

I took a half-step back, folding my arms across my chest as I watched the spectacle unfold. For an entire year, I had been the villain in their fairytale. I had been the broken, hysterical woman who couldn't give her husband a family, the woman who supposedly lost her mind after failed IVF treatments, the woman who abandoned her charity because she was too consumed by her own jealousy. I had spent countless nights in my tiny apartment above the bakery, listening to the morning bread delivery trucks while staring at the ceiling, wondering if I truly was the hollow shell Ethan had made me out to be.

Seeing them now—the golden couple of Manhattan’s elite philanthropic scene, tearing each other apart over a hospital tile floor covered in spilled baby formula—was a surreal form of justice.

"Ethan, listen to me," Madison sobbed, holding the baby tightly against her shoulder as the infant began to cry loudly, startled by the shouting. "It was... it was during the separation. Before the divorce was finalized! You were working late every night with the legal team, you were distant, you told me it was over between us, and I was so lonely—"

"You slept with someone else while you were helping me kick Claire out of my house?!" Ethan snapped, his voice cracking with humiliation. "You told me he was mine! You let me name him after my father! I held him in the delivery room! I posted his picture on the front page of the New York Observer!"

"You wanted a son!" Madison screamed back, all composure completely shattered. "You were obsessed with proving to the world that you weren't the problem! You told me every single day that Claire was defective, but you were terrified that people would find out the truth! You needed a baby, Ethan! I gave you what you needed to save your pathetic pride!"

The truth burst through the air like a sudden explosion. The nurses whispered furiously behind the counter. One of them pulled out a smartphone, quickly tapping away at the screen. Ethan noticed the movement and whipped his head around, his face turning an angry shade of crimson.

"Put that phone away!" he barked at the nurse, pointing a trembling finger. "Do you have any idea who I am? I sit on the board of directors for this entire medical network!"

"Not anymore," Adrian corrected smoothly. "The board held an emergency executive session two hours ago, Mr. Vance. Following the submission of the internal audit regarding the altered medical records, your position on the board has been suspended pending the outcome of the criminal investigation."

Ethan spun back around, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Suspended? You can't suspend me! I built the expansion wing! My family’s name is carved into the foundation stone at the main entrance!"

"And tomorrow morning, a masonry crew will begin removing it," I said quietly, stepping forward so that Ethan was forced to meet my gaze directly. "You built that wing using money embezzled from my charity foundation, Ethan. You thought you were so clever, moving the funds through Madison’s shell company in Delaware. But you forgot one thing."

Ethan stared at me, his chest heaving, his mouth slightly open as if he were trying to find the words to intimidate me the way he used to. But the power dynamic had completely shifted. I wasn't the broken, weeping woman who had signed the divorce papers with a shaking hand while sitting at a cold mahogany table.

"What?" he managed to whisper.

"You forgot that I was the one who designed the financial filing system for the foundation," I said, offering him a small, cold smile. "I knew every account number, every passkey, and every wire transfer route by heart. I didn't need the missing pages from my medical file to ruin you, Ethan. I just needed enough time to trace the money you gave to the clinic administrator to buy his silence."

Ethan took a step toward me, his hand reaching out aggressively, but Adrian immediately stepped into his path, his tall frame blocking Ethan entirely.

"I suggest you keep your distance, Mr. Vance," Adrian said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "The officers down the hall aren't here just to keep the peace. They are waiting for the Assistant District Attorney to issue the formal bench warrant."

As if on cue, the double doors at the end of the corridor swung open. Two men in crisp business suits walked through, accompanied by a woman holding a leather briefcase. I recognized her immediately—ADA Marcus, the lead prosecutor assigned to the financial fraud division.

Madison let out a high-pitched gasp and backed into the corner, hugging the crying baby as close to her chest as she could. Ethan turned, his eyes darting frantically toward the elevators behind us, looking for an exit, looking for an escape from the inescapable wall of reality closing in on him.

"Ethan Vance? Madison Reed?" ADA Marcus announced clearly, her voice cutting through the silent corridor with total authority. "I have a warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, scheme to defraud in the first degree, and falsification of business records."

"This is a mistake!" Ethan shouted, stepping back until his body hit the nursing counter. "Do you know who my lawyers are? I am Ethan Vance! I am the CEO of Vance Global Partners!"

May you like

"Your lawyers are currently at your office, Mr. Vance," ADA Marcus replied coolly, signaling the officers behind her. "And from what I understand, your board of directors is currently convening an emergency meeting to remove you from that position as well."

The police officers stepped forward, pulling silver handcuffs from their belts. The metallic clicking sound rang out through the maternity ward, sharp and final.
