Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Empire

The heavy glass door clicked open, and Madison burst into the warm loft, bringing the smell of cold rain and ozone with her. She stumbled forward, her knees giving out, and collapsed onto the hardwood floor right in front of my desk.
"Claire, please!" she sobbed, holding up her shaking hands in a desperate gesture of surrender. "You have to help me! Ethan’s father... Harrison... he’s trying to steal my baby! He sent private security to my apartment an hour ago! They told me if I didn't surrender full custody of Leo to the Vance family estate, they would have me thrown in state prison for twenty years!"
I looked down at her, my heart hardened by the revelation of what she and Ethan had done to me. "You helped them ruin my life, Madison. You sat in my living room, drank my wine, and listened to me cry about my failed treatments while you were taking money from Ethan’s offshore accounts."
"I didn't know about the drugs!" Madison screamed, her voice cracking with terror. She reached into her wet plastic bag and pulled out a stack of printouts, throwing them onto the floor between us. "I swear to God, Claire! I knew Ethan was altering the fertility summary pages to make you think you were the problem! I knew he wanted to force you into signing over your foundation shares! But I didn't know what his uncle was doing to you! I swear on my child's life, I didn't know!"
Adrian stepped forward, picking up the damp papers from the floor. He scanned them quickly, his eyes sharpening as he turned through the pages.
"What are these?" Adrian asked.
"Emails," Madison gasped, wiping rain and tears from her face. "Messages between Ethan, Harrison, and the family attorney. When Ethan realized the district attorney was opening a formal investigation into the foundation, he realized he needed a scapegoat. He was planning to blame the entire financial fraud on me! He forged my name on the offshore corporation setup documents!"
I looked at Adrian, who gave me a subtle nod. The papers contained internal emails from the Vance Global Partners server—files that Ethan had tried to delete before his arrest, but which Madison had managed to copy from his laptop before the police seized his equipment.
"Why bring these to me, Madison?" I asked, my voice cold and detached. "You could have taken these straight to your criminal defense attorney."
"Because my attorney told me Harrison Vance owns the firm representing me!" Madison sobbed, grabbing the bottom of my trousers with wet, trembling fingers. "They set me up, Claire! They used me to give Ethan a child to show the public, and now that the DNA test proved he isn't Ethan's, Harrison wants to declare me an unfit mother, take Leo, and bury me in maximum security prison so I can never talk!"
"Who is the father, Madison?" I asked directly, repeating the question Ethan had roared at her in the hospital hallway.
Madison swallowed hard, looking up at me with terror-filled eyes. "It... it was Dr. Julian Ross. The junior specialist at the fertility clinic. The one who administered your injections."
A dark, heavy silence descended upon the loft. Maya gasped from behind her desk. Adrian stood completely still, his knuckles whitening around the papers he was holding.
"Julian Ross," Adrian repeated slowly, his voice laced with venom. "The doctor who was assigned to Claire’s case after I was transferred off the fertility panel."
"Ethan paid him to administer the experimental hormones," Madison admitted, her voice dropping to a broken whisper. "Julian felt guilty... he hated what they were doing to Claire. One night, after a private clinic event, Julian was drunk at my apartment. He told me everything. He told me Ethan was killing Claire’s chances of ever having a baby naturally. I was so scared, so confused... one thing led to another. When I found out I was pregnant, I panicked. I knew if I told Ethan the baby was Julian's, Ethan would destroy us both. So I let Ethan believe he was the father."
"You used a child as a human shield," I said, feeling a cold sensation wash over me. "You let Ethan parade that innocent baby around as proof of his manhood while knowing he was the product of the very crime being committed against me."
"I was trying to survive!" Madison cried out, reaching up toward me. "Claire, please! We used to be best friends! I made a horrible, unforgivable mistake, but Leo is innocent! Harrison Vance has judge friends in the family court! If they take him, I will never see him again!"
I walked over to the window, staring out at the rain washing over the city streets. The city lights blurs into smears of red and yellow on the glass. One year ago, I was the one crying on the floor, begging for answers, wondering why the world had been so cruel to me. I had lost my home, my family, my health, and my dignity.
Now, the people who had crushed me were eating each other alive.
I turned back to face Madison. "Get up."
Madison hesitated, looking at me with wide, terrified eyes. "What?"
"Get up off the floor," I commanded sternly. "You are going to sit at that table, and you are going to give a full, sworn affidavit to Sarah Jenkins and ADA Marcus. You are going to name every single person involved—Ethan, Harrison, Dr. Julian Ross, and Harold Vance. You are going to give them every password, every bank account, and every email you have."
"And... and Leo?" Madison asked, her breath hitching.
"If you cooperate fully with the federal prosecutors, Sarah will arrange for protective custody through a neutral state family agency," I said coldly. "Harrison Vance will never touch that child. But don't mistake this for forgiveness, Madison. You are still going to prison for financial fraud. The only difference is, you won't be taking the fall for the Vance family's sins."
Madison collapsed into fresh tears, but this time, she nodded frantically, wiping her face with her wet sleeves. "Thank you... thank you, Claire... thank you..."
Adrian walked over to my side as Maya led Madison toward the private office room to begin taking her statement. He looked down at me, a soft, respectful smile touching his lips.

"You could have let Harrison destroy her," Adrian noted quietly.
"I could have," I replied, looking out the window once more. "But I don't want them to just go down. I want the entire tree pulled up by its roots."
