Chapter 6 - Secrets of the Past

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting sharp, golden beams of light across the federal courthouse steps in Lower Manhattan. Dozens of news cameras, reporters, and satellite vans crowded behind metal barricades, creating a chaotic wall of flashing lights and shouted questions.

"CLAIRE! IS IT TRUE THE VANCE FAMILY WAS LAUNDERING MONEY THROUGH YOUR CHARITY?"

"DR. VALE, CAN YOU COMMENT ON THE MEDICAL MALPRACTICE ALLEGATIONS?"

"CLAIRE, DO YOU HAVE A STATEMENT FOR ETHAN VANCE?"

I walked up the granite steps, flanked by Adrian on my left and Sarah Jenkins on my right. I wore a tailored cream-colored suit, my hair pinned back neatly, my head held high. I didn't offer a single word to the screaming reporters. I didn't need to. The legal documents we were about to file in Federal District Court would speak loudly enough for the entire world.

Inside the quiet, cavernous marble hallway of the courthouse, the noise of the media crowd faded into a low echo. We walked toward Courtroom 402, where the preliminary bail hearing and indictment motions for Ethan Vance were scheduled to take place.

Standing near the heavy bronze doors of the courtroom was Harrison Vance, accompanied by a army of defense attorneys. He looked distinctly older than he had four days ago. The pristine, untouchable aura of the Vance family patriarch was cracked. His eyes were heavy with fatigue, and his famous silver walking cane seemed less like a prop of authority and more like a necessary crutch.

When he saw us approach, he stepped away from his legal team and walked directly into our path.

"Claire," Harrison said, his voice stripped of its previous booming arrogance. "A word in private. Please."

Sarah started to step in front of me, but I held up a hand, stopping her. "It's fine, Sarah. Give us a moment."

Adrian stayed close by, his eyes trained sharply on Harrison as the old man led me toward a quiet alcove near the stained-glass windows at the end of the hall.

"What is it, Harrison?" I asked, keeping my voice cool and neutral. "The deadline for your response to our settlement terms passed two hours ago."

Harrison let out a slow, heavy exhale, looking down at the polished marble floor before raising his eyes to meet mine. "Ethan is a fool. A weak, selfish fool who ruined everything my father and I spent seventy years building. I am not here to defend him anymore."

I raised an eyebrow, surprised by the sudden detachment in his voice. "You're cutting him loose?"

"The board voted this morning," Harrison revealed quietly. "Ethan has been formally removed as CEO of Vance Global Partners. His shares have been frozen, and the company is preparing to cooperate fully with the Department of Justice."

"A corporate sacrifice to save the family name," I said with a bitter smile. "Classic Vance strategy."

"It's not just that, Claire," Harrison said, his voice dropping to an almost imperceptible whisper. "There is something you don't know. Something Ethan never knew. Something I kept hidden for thirty years."

I frowned, sensing a shift in the tone of his voice. "What are you talking about?"

Harrison reached inside his wool overcoat and pulled out an old, yellowed piece of parchment paper, folded into four. He held it out toward me with a trembling hand.

"My brother, Harold... the doctor in Zurich," Harrison began, his eyes filling with an ancient, dark regret. "Thirty years ago, long before you ever met Ethan, my father forced Harold out of the country because of an illegally conducted trial on reproductive genetics. Harold was obsessed with human enhancement... with controlling lineage, with curing genetic deficiencies through unauthorized cellular manipulation."

I looked down at the yellowed paper in my hand, slowly unfolding it. It was a medical birth registry document from 1994, bearing the official stamp of a private clinic in upstate New York.

My eyes scanned the document, and my heart abruptly stopped.

The mother's name listed on the document was Eleanor Vance—Ethan’s mother, who had supposedly died in a car accident when Ethan was two years old.

The child's birth name was listed as Ethan Vance.

But under the section marked Paternal Genetic Source, the space was blank, save for a red stamp that read: DONOR - PROJECT ALPHA (CLINIC FILE #409).

I looked up at Harrison, my breath caught in my throat. "Ethan... Ethan was born through Harold's illegal genetic experiment?"

"Ethan’s father wasn't me, Claire," Harrison whispered, his voice cracking with old shame. "I was infertile. Just like Ethan. My father couldn't tolerate the idea of the Vance bloodline dying out. So he forced my wife to undergo Harold's experimental procedures using donor materials from a private genetic repository. When Eleanor realized what they had done to her child, she tried to leave. She didn't die in a car accident, Claire. She took her own life."

The sheer scale of the generational deceit left me speechless. The grand Vance empire—the dynasty that prided itself on pure bloodlines, aristocratic heritage, and genetic superiority—was built entirely on a horrific, secret lie.

"Ethan’s genetic abnormalities... his inability to father children..." I stammered, putting the pieces together. "It was a direct side effect of the experimental procedure Harold used to create him?"

"Yes," Harrison confessed, tears finally slipping down his wrinkled cheeks. "Harold knew Ethan would be sterile from the day he was born. And when you and Ethan had trouble conceiving, Harold saw an opportunity to continue his research. He convinced Ethan that the problem was yours, using Ethan’s desperate pride against him, all while continuing his sickening experiments on you."

"And you let it happen?" I asked, raw disgust trembling in my voice. "You knew your brother was torturing me with unapproved drugs, and you said nothing?!"

"I didn't know the extent of it until last week!" Harrison insisted desperately, reaching out as if to touch my arm, though he pulled back when Adrian stepped closer. "I swear to you, Claire! I thought Harold was just giving you standard offshore IVF protocols! I didn't know he was using you as a test subject! When I found out, I tried to force Harold to destroy the records, but he threatened to release the proof of Ethan’s true parentage to the press!"

I held the old document tight in my hand, feeling the brittle paper crinkle under my fingers.

The tragedy of Ethan Vance was suddenly brutally clear. He had spent his entire life trying to live up to the impossible standards of a father who wasn't his father, carrying a physical defect inherited from a corporate secret, turning into a monster to prove a lie that had been thrust upon him before he was even born.

"Does Ethan know?" I asked quietly.

"No," Harrison said, shaking his head slowly. "He still believes he is my biological son. He still believes he is the rightful heir to the Vance legacy."

I looked down the long marble hallway toward the bronze doors of Courtroom 402. Inside that room, Ethan was waiting in handcuffs, believing he was fighting for his father's empire, believing his family’s power would eventually pull him out of the fire.

"He needs to know," I said flatly.

May you like

"Claire, please," Harrison begged, dropping his head in total defeat. "If that gets out, the family name will be destroyed forever."

"Your family name was destroyed thirty years ago, Harrison," I replied, turning away from him. "You just spent three decades pretending you couldn't smell the rot."
