Chapter 9 - Unearthing the Truth

The abrupt end of the audio recording left a heavy, suffocating silence hanging over the clearing. The revelation hit me like a physical blow—Elena hadn’t just caught Julian stealing money; she had uncovered his true identity and his horrific past. She had known she was living with a monster who had made other women disappear, and she had been trying to build a case against him in secret to protect herself and Maya.
Detective Vance immediately signaled for her forensic team to secure the digital recorder. “He knew she was onto him,” Vance said, turning back to me with a look of sharp determination. “That’s what triggered the violence on Thursday night. When Elena confronted him with proof of his past, Croft panicked and accelerated his timeline.”
“Where is the black ledger she mentioned?” I asked urgently, stepping closer to the evidence table. “She said it was hidden somewhere. If that ledger contains details of his previous crimes, it could lock him away for the rest of his life.”
“Our team is searching Elena’s house right now,” Vance replied, stepping toward her command vehicle. “If Croft didn’t find it first, we will.”
Two hours later, I arrived back at the regional hospital under police escort. The morning sun was finally breaking through the heavy rain clouds, painting the sky in pale shades of orange and gold. I walked down the quiet hallway of the pediatric ward, my head throbbing beneath the fresh white bandage wrapped around my forehead.
When I opened the door to Maya’s room, my heart instantly lifted. Elena was propped up in a wheelchair beside Maya’s bed, her arm wrapped in a heavy sling, but her eyes were bright as she held our daughter close. A police officer stood guard outside the door, ensuring their safety.
Maya looked up and gasped when she saw me, reaching her arms out. “Daddy!”
I rushed over, wrapping my arms around both of them, burying my face in Maya’s soft hair. For the first time in four agonizing days, the terrifying weight pressing down on my chest began to lift.
“The police told me what you did,” Elena whispered, tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at the stitches on my temple. “Mark... you went into that cabin alone for me. You could have been killed.”
“You fought for Maya,” I said softly, looking directly into her eyes. “You risked everything to keep our daughter safe from that scoundrel. I wasn’t going to let him take you.”
A gentle knock sounded at the door, and Detective Vance walked in, holding a sealed evidence folder. The serious expression on her face made the room go quiet instantly.
“Mr. and Mrs. Miller,” Vance began, stepping toward the bedside. “We found the black ledger.”
Elena drew a sharp breath. “Where was it?”
“Hidden inside Maya’s old school backpack in the attic,” Vance revealed. “Croft searched the entire house, but he never thought to check a child’s discarded school bag. The ledger contains detailed bank account numbers, alias names, and dates spanning over a decade. It links Julian Croft directly to the disappearances of three missing women across the country.”
Maya clutched her teddy bear tighter, looking up at us with wide, innocent eyes. “Is the bad man going away forever now, Daddy?”

I squeezed her small hand, looking over at Elena, whose face showed a mixture of overwhelming relief and deep emotional catharsis.
“Yes, sweetheart,” I said firmly, my voice steady and resolute. “He’s never, ever coming back.”
