Chapter 3 - The Ransom of Secrets

The line went completely dead, leaving only the harsh, mocking tone of a busy signal echoing in my ear. My knees felt weak, and I had to lean against the cold plaster wall of the hospital corridor to keep from collapsing. Detective Vance was already shouting into her radio, demanding a emergency trace on the call, but I could tell from the grim look on her face that Julian had been smart enough to use a burner or a spoofed satellite connection.
“Did he give a location?” Vance asked urgently, grabbing my forearm. “Mark, what did he say?”
“He said no police,” I managed to choke out, my throat dry. “He heard her scream, Vance. Elena is alive, but he’s torturing her. He knows I took Maya. He knows everything.”
“Listen to me,” Vance insisted, her grip tightening on my arm. “You cannot go rogue. Julian is a master manipulator. He’s spent months planning this financial heist, siphon-feeding funds out of Elena’s family trusts. He is desperate, armed, and extremely dangerous. If you try to meet him on your own, he will kill both you and Elena.”
“And if I wait for your search grid, she dies anyway!” I snapped, pulling my arm away. “You heard what he said. He knows your department is looking for his silver Explorer. He’s already swapped vehicles.”
Vance didn’t argue because deep down, she knew I was right. Serial manipulators like Julian didn't leave obvious clues. He had constructed an entire false life, posing as a mild-mannered, wealthy investor to charm his way into Elena’s life, all while systematically dismantling her inheritance and planning her execution.
I walked back into Maya’s hospital room, my head spinning with dark scenarios. Maya looked up as the door opened, her tear-stained eyes searching my face with an intuition far beyond her ten years.
“Daddy?” she whispered softly. “Was that him?”
I sat on the edge of her mattress, taking her cold hands in mine. I couldn’t lie to her, not after everything she had suffered. “He called, Maya. But the police are tracking him down.”
Maya leaned closer, her voice trembling violently. “He has a house, Daddy. A secret house in the mountains.”
I froze, staring at her in shock. “What did you say?”
“A few weeks ago, Mommy and Julian were fighting in his office,” Maya explained, clutching her bear tightly against her chest. “Mommy found keys and papers for a cabin near Blackwood Lake. Julian got really mad that she found them. He said it was just an investment property, but he made Mommy swear never to mention it to anyone. He hid the key inside his tackle box in the garage.”
My mind raced back to the garage where the police had found the bloodstains. The tackle box. It had likely been overlooked during the initial crime scene processing as just ordinary junk.
I looked over at Detective Vance, who was standing in the doorway, listening closely to Maya’s words. She immediately pulled out her phone to call the forensic unit at the house.
“Get a team back to the garage,” Vance ordered into the receiver. “Check for a tackle box. We need any property deeds, keys, or address records tied to Blackwood Lake.”
Ten minutes felt like ten hours as we waited in that quiet hospital room. Every tick of the clock was a reminder that Elena’s time was running out. Finally, Vance’s phone buzzed. She listened for a few seconds, her face growing grimmer by the moment.
“The tackle box was cleared out,” Vance said as she hung up, looking directly at me. “Whoever went back to the house after the kidnapping wiped the garage clean of all personal files. Julian went back to cover his tracks.”
“No,” I said, a terrifying realization dawning on me. “He didn’t go back to cover his tracks. He went back to make sure we couldn’t track him to Blackwood Lake. Which means that’s exactly where he took her.”

My phone buzzed again in my coat pocket. A single text message from the same unknown number appeared on the screen, containing only a set of GPS coordinates and three simple words:
COME ALONE. ONE HOUR.
