Zero nine

Chapter 6 - The Shattered Mirror

The barrel of Julian’s gun didn’t waver. His intention was absolute, written in the dead, unblinking glare of a man who had already crossed every moral boundary imaginable. I braced myself, my muscles coiled, preparing to leap toward him the moment his finger tightened on the trigger—knowing it was a desperate, likely fatal move, but the only option left.

Suddenly, a deafening crash echoed from the floor above us.

The entire ceiling shook as a piece of heavy timber cracked, sending a shower of dust and splinters raining down onto our heads. Julian reflexively jerked his flashlight upward toward the sound, his attention breaking for a fraction of a second.

It was the only opening I needed.

I lunged forward with everything I had, driving my shoulder directly into Julian’s midsection. We both slammed hard onto the muddy ground, the flashlight flying out of his hand and tumbling across the room, casting wildly dancing shadows against the rotting walls.

Julian gasped as the breath was knocked out of him, but he recovered with terrifying speed. He swung his right arm, driving the heavy metal handle of the pistol hard against the side of my face. Pain exploded behind my eyes, blinding me with a flash of white light. Blood immediately began pouring from a gash near my temple, warm and slick as it ran down my cheek.

I pinned his wrist to the dirt, fighting with all my strength to keep the gun pointed away from us. We rolled violently across the floor, kicking up cloud of damp earth, grunting and cursing in the dark. Julian was stronger than he looked, fueled by a frantic, psychotic adrenaline. He dug his fingers into my throat, squeezing hard, cutting off my air supply.

Dark spots danced across my vision as I choked, struggling to breathe. Through the haze of pain, I heard Elena thrashing frantically in her chair, kicking her legs against the wooden floorboards to create noise, trying desperately to help me.

My right hand blindly searched the mud beneath us, searching for anything to use as a weapon. My fingers brushed against something hard and cold—the iron tire iron I had dropped earlier.

Summoning every ounce of strength remaining in my oxygen-deprived body, I wrapped my fingers around the iron bar and swung it upward with raw, desperate force.

The heavy metal struck Julian sharply across the collarbone with a sickening crack.

Julian shrieked in agony, his grip on my throat instantly loosening as his left arm went limp. The gun slipped from his fingers, bouncing away into the darkness. I shoved him off me, scrambling across the floor on my hands and knees, gasping air back into my burning lungs.

“Elena!” I croaked out, wiping the blood from my eyes as I reached her chair.

Using the edge of the tire iron, I frantically pried at the heavy ropes binding her wrists. The rough twine snapped under the pressure. Elena instantly tore the thick tape from her mouth, coughing hysterically as she grabbed my bloodied jacket.

“Mark! He has a knife in his belt!” she screamed, her voice hoarse and raw.

I spun around just in time. Julian was rising from the dirt like a shadow, his face twisted in a mask of rage, holding an eight-inch hunting blade in his uninjured right hand.

“You ruined everything!” Julian screamed, charging blindly toward us with the knife raised.

Before he could reach us, the basement door at the top of the wooden stairs was kicked off its hinges with a thunderous bang. Bright, blinding beams of tactical flashlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the entire room in a harsh, white glare.

“POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!”
