Chapter 8 - The Web of Deception

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, casting a pale, eerie light across the murky surface of Blackwood Lake. The air was frigid, thick with the smell of damp pine and wet earth. I stood near the back of an emergency response vehicle, wrapped in a heavy blanket while a paramedic finished stitching up the gash on my forehead.
My mind was spinning from Detective Vance’s revelation. Julian wasn’t just a financial scammer who had gone off the rails; he was a systematic, calculating predator who built entire lives around wealthy, vulnerable women, drained their fortunes, and then erased them from existence.
“Three other women?” I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. “Are you telling me Elena was just his fourth target?”
“Target number four that we know of,” Vance corrected, her face grim as she flipped through the pages of the recovered binder inside the protective plastic bag. “The real name behind those fingerprints is Julian Croft. He was indicted eight years ago in Oregon for corporate fraud, but he skipped bail and completely vanished. He’s been operating under stolen identities ever since.”
She showed me a page containing photocopied newspaper clippings and police reports from different states.
“In 2019, a wealthy widow in Washington state disappeared three months after marrying a man matching Croft’s description,” Vance explained, pointing to a photograph of a smiling woman beside a man whose face had been subtly altered with glasses and a beard. “Her accounts were liquidated, and her home was sold under a forged power of attorney. In 2022, another woman in Colorado went missing under nearly identical circumstances. No bodies were ever recovered. Croft made sure of that.”
A sickening chill swept through my body. Elena hadn’t just survived an abusive husband; she had narrowly escaped becoming the latest victim in a string of untraceable murders. And Maya… if Maya hadn’t seen what happened in the kitchen, Croft likely would have disposed of both of them without raising alarm for weeks.
“Why didn’t he kill Maya immediately?” I asked, my voice shaking with raw anger. “Why lock her in that cage instead of getting rid of her?”
“Because he needed leverage,” Vance said softly. “Elena knew the passwords to her family trust accounts. Croft tried to force Elena to execute the wire transfers, but she refused to co-operate—until he threatened to hurt Maya. That’s why he kept Maya alive in that yard. He was using her as a bargaining chip to force Elena to sign over her assets.”
It all made terrifying sense now. The locked cage, the murky pool filled with heavy safe-deposit boxes, the sudden secrecy—it was all part of a brutal, high-stakes extortion scheme taking place right beneath our noses.
An officer called Vance over to Julian’s black pickup truck, where forensic technicians were searching the vehicle’s interior. Vance nodded to me and walked over to the open driver’s side door.
I watched from a distance as they pulled a heavy metal lockbox from beneath the back seat. Inside were several passports bearing different names, thick stacks of foreign currency, and a small digital recording device.
Vance pressed play on the recording device.
A familiar voice echoed softly through the quiet forest clearing—a voice that made my heart freeze in my chest.
It was Elena’s voice, recorded days before the attack, speaking in a hushed, terrified whisper to someone on the phone.

“He doesn’t know I found out about the other women,” Elena’s recorded voice said, trembling with sheer terror. “If anything happens to me, look for the black ledger in the—”
The audio suddenly cut off with the sound of a door crashing open, followed by Julian’s icy voice: “Who are you talking to, Elena?”
