Chapter 5 - The Ashes of Eleanor

Z

With Adrian locked in a federal detention center awaiting arraignment and Hawthorne Development absorbed into Vale Consolidated, only one lingering ghost remained: Eleanor Hawthorne.

Three days after the boardroom arrest, I pulled up to the Hawthorne estate in a black limousine. The storm had passed, replaced by a cold, sharp autumn sun that illuminated the grand marble facade. But the grandeur was gone. Process servers, liquidation teams, and movers were swarming the property, tagging furniture with bright pink asset-seizure labels.

Eleanor was sitting on a wrought-iron bench near the garden gates, wrapped in an old sweater, looking fifty years older than she had three nights ago. Her polished, high-society persona had completely disintegrated. Her manicured hair was wild, her eyes hollow and bloodshot.

When my driver opened the car door and I stepped out, her head snapped toward me. She scrambled to her feet, stumbling slightly on the gravel.

"You vile, malicious girl!" she shrieked, charging toward me, but two of my father's private security detail instantly stepped between us like an impenetrable wall. "You destroyed my family! You put my son in prison! You stole my house!"

"This house was bought with Vale capital, Eleanor," I said quietly, stopping a few feet away. "You lived in luxury off my father's wealth while treating me like dirt beneath your shoes."

"You lied to us!" she screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. "You pretended to be a nobody! You tricked Adrian into marrying you!"

"I never lied," I replied firmly. "I simply didn't brag. I wanted a husband who loved me for who I was, not for my family's bank account. But Adrian was too blind and greedy to see what he had. And you taught him that greed."

Miriam walked up behind me, holding a clipboard with legal notices. "Mrs. Hawthorne, your bail conditions forbid you from approaching Mrs. Vale Mercer. Furthermore, your personal bankruptcy filing has been formally registered. The court has approved the complete liquidation of your jewelry, wardrobe, and secondary properties to satisfy the four million dollars in missing charitable funds you embezzled."

Eleanor froze, her trembling hand flying to her neck, where her signature diamond necklace usually sat. It was gone, seized by court bailiffs earlier that morning.

"You can't take everything..." she whimpered, her rage suddenly turning into pathetic desperation. "Where am I supposed to go? I have no money! I have no home! Adrian is facing twenty years in prison!"

"You can move into the small apartment downtown," I said flatly. "The one Adrian bought for Vanessa using company money. Since it was seized as part of the asset recovery, I have authorized the trust to allow you to rent it... at market rate."

Eleanor gasped in horror. "Live in that woman's apartment?! Are you insane?!"

"It's either that or a state shelter, Eleanor," I said, stepping closer and looking down at her. "The exact same shelter you sneered at when you thought Adrian was throwing me out in the mud."

She fell to her knees on the cold gravel driveway, sobbing hysterically into her worn sweater, clutching at the hem of my coat. "Claire... please... I'm your child's grandmother! Have mercy!"

I gently pulled the hem of my coat out of her grasp.

"Mercy is a luxury for people who show it to others," I whispered. "You showed me none when I was six months pregnant, standing in the rain. You spat in my face, Eleanor."

I turned my back on her weeping figure and walked back toward the waiting limousine. As the driver opened the door, I looked at the grand Hawthorne mansion one last time. Movers were already hauling out the massive oil portraits of Adrian's ancestors.

"Sell the estate," I instructed Miriam as I sat back in the soft leather seat. "Daze the structure, tear it down, and build a pediatric health clinic on the land."

May you like

"Right away, Mrs. Vale," Miriam replied with a sharp smile.

As the car pulled away, leaving Eleanor sobbing in the dust of her fallen empire, I felt the baby kick lightly against my hand. The past was burned to ashes. It was time to build the future.
