Chapter 3 - The Frozen Fortune

The private suite at Vale Memorial Hospital was quiet, warm, and entirely disconnected from the chaos unfolding back at the Hawthorne estate. The monitor hummed soft, rhythmic beats as the chief obstetrician completed the ultrasound scan.
"The baby is in perfect health, Miss Vale," Dr. Aris said with a reassuring smile, wiping the gel off my stomach. "Elevated blood pressure from the stress, but physically, both you and the baby boy are completely stable."
I let out a long breath I felt like I’d been holding for three long, agonizing years. "Thank you, doctor."
Sitting by the window, my father closed his encrypted satellite phone and stood up. His chief legal advisor, Miriam Shaw, entered the room, setting down a heavy leather binder filled with real-time financial tracking updates.
"Give me the damage report, Miriam," my father commanded, staring out at the Manhattan skyline drenched in midnight rain.
"It’s catastrophic for them," Miriam reported, her voice carrying a sharp, professional satisfaction. "As of midnight, Vale Consolidated officially executed the emergency default clause on Hawthorne Development. We have frozen twenty-four corporate bank accounts, revoked their lines of credit at four major commercial banks, and seized control of their flagship construction projects across the city."
I sat up, adjusting the soft hospital gown. "What about Adrian's mother and Vanessa?"
"Eleanor Hawthorne tried to transfer two million dollars out of her charitable foundation at 1:00 AM," Miriam chuckled coldly. "Our automated fraud detection flag immediately blocked the transfer. The police were notified regarding embezzlement, as those foundation funds were illegally diverted from Vale-subsidized grants. She is currently being questioned at the 14th Precinct."
A small, ironic smile touched my lips. Eleanor, who had looked down on me as a penniless Nobody, was now sitting in a cold precinct holding cell because she couldn't keep her hands off money that ultimately belonged to my father.
"And Adrian?" I asked.
"He’s panicking," Miriam replied, opening her tablet. "He spent the last three hours calling every high-society friend, investor, and board member he knows, begging for emergency loans. But news travels fast in the financial district. Once word broke that Vale Consolidated stripped him of his voting power and evicted him from the estate, nobody would pick up his calls. By sunrise, Hawthorne Development will be declared functionally insolvent."
Suddenly, my phone on the nightstand began to buzz frantically. The screen lit up with Adrian’s caller ID. He had called forty-two times in two hours.
My father looked at the phone, then at me. "Do you want me to block it?"
"No," I said quietly, reaching out to tap the speaker button. "Let him speak."
"Claire! Claire, please!" Adrian’s frantic voice exploded through the room. He sounded breathless, erratic, and desperate. "Claire, listen to me! Vanessa is gone—she packed her bags and left me at a hotel the second she realized the penthouse accounts were frozen! She took my car! Please, baby, you have to fix this! My mother is in jail! The board is holding an emergency meeting at seven AM to fire me!"
"You brought this on yourself, Adrian," I said calmly, my tone as icy as the storm outside.
"I was stupid! I made a mistake!" he sobbed, his voice cracking violently. "I was influenced by my mother and Vanessa! I didn't mean any of it! I love you, Claire! I've always loved you! We're having a son together! You can't let your father destroy everything I worked for!"
"You didn't work for any of it, Adrian," I replied, feeling no remaining attachment to the man weeping on the line. "My father’s capital kept your firm afloat while you used my generosity to buy luxury cars for your mistress and designer bags for your mother. You called my charity work 'cute.' You threw my mother's ultrasound photo in the gutter."
"Claire, please—"
"The board meeting at seven AM?" I cut in softly. "Don't bother attending. As the 85% voting share owner, I have already signed the executive order removing you as CEO. You are fired, Adrian."
Before he could scream another desperate plea, I tapped the screen and disconnected the call, turning the phone completely off.
My father walked over and placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "What's the next step, sweetheart?"
May you like
I looked at the ultrasound photo sitting on the bedside table—the one my father's security team had carefully retrieved from the mud and cleaned.
"The Hawthorne name is finished," I said coldly. "Now, we take everything else."
