Zero nine

Chapter 14 - The Golden Cage

A collective shriek of horror rippled through the trapped socialites. Several women collapsed to their knees, weeping, as Eleanor's armed mercenaries kept their weapons trained on the crowd.

My heart pounded like a war drum in my chest, but I forced my face to remain absolute ice.

"You won't blow up a children's hospital, Eleanor," I said smoothly, taking another step forward, keeping her eyes locked onto mine. "Not because you have a conscience—we both know you never had one—but because you're a narcissist. You came here for an audience. You came here to watch me break."

Eleanor’s grip on the detonator tightened, her knuckles turning bone-white. "I want to see you drop to your knees and beg! Just like I had to drop to my knees in the mud outside my own home! Beg me, Claire! Beg me for the lives of those children!"

I stood tall in my gold gown, refusing to bend an inch.

"I will never beg you for anything, Eleanor," I said softly. "Because unlike you... I don't leave my assets unguarded."

I tapped the small gold brooch on my lapel three times.

Instantly, the heavy glass skylights high above the Great Hall shattered in a thunderous explosion of safety glass. Four heavy tactical ropes dropped from the ceiling, and black-clad SWAT operatives swung down into the room with blinding speed.

Before Eleanor's mercenaries could even raise their weapons, flashbang grenades detonated in mid-air with a deafening BANG and a blinding burst of white light.

The crowd screamed as the mercenaries were thrown off balance, disoriented and blinded. In less than three seconds, Vale security officers tackling them from the shadows slammed the three gunmen onto the marble floor, disarming them before a single shot could be fired.

Eleanor shrieked in rage, raising her thumb to press the red button on the detonator—

CLICK.

A red laser dot appeared precisely in the center of her hand.

"Move that thumb one millimeter, Mrs. Hawthorne," a voice boomed from the upper balcony, "and the sniper round will take your hand off before your brain can send the signal."

Eleanor froze, trembling violently, staring at the small red dot glowing on her flesh.

Miriam stepped out from behind a stone pillar, holding a secure radio tablet. "And for your information, Mrs. Hawthorne, our bomb disposal squad swept the pediatric hospital forty minutes ago. Your explosive charges were located, disarmed, and secured by the NYPD bomb squad."

The detonator slipped from Eleanor's trembling fingers, clattering uselessly onto the cold marble floor.

She looked at me, her eyes wide with total, catastrophic defeat. The terrifying phantom queen had shrunk back into a pathetic, dying old woman trapped in a velvet dress.

"How...?" she whimpered, her voice cracking into a dry sob. "How did you know?"

"You used your sister's European banking channels, Eleanor," I said, stepping right up to her, looking down into her hollow face. "Who do you think bought out Victoria Vance's bank two years ago? Vale Consolidated owns the servers you used to hire those men."

Eleanor gasped, her chest heaving as the crushing reality hit her. She hadn't been hunting me. I had been her shepherd, guiding her straight into this trap from the moment she touched her sister's money.

"You... you monster..." she whispered.

"No, Eleanor," I replied softly, watching as four federal agents stepped forward to place heavy steel cuffs around her wrists. "I'm just the girl you threw out in the rain."
