Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Massacre

Z
At precisely 6:45 AM, the glass-walled penthouse board room of Hawthorne Headquarters overlooking Wall Street was packed to capacity. Board members, senior executives, and minority shareholders huddled in hushed, panicked groups, clutching hot coffees and staring at the blood-red numbers flashing on the stock tickers.
The news had hit the financial market at dawn: Hawthorne Development was facing an immediate liquidity collapse, and Vale Consolidated was executing a hostile takeover.
The heavy double doors swung open, and Adrian rushed in, looking completely unraveled. His suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and dark circles hollowed out his pale eyes.
"Everyone, sit down!" Adrian shouted, trying desperately to project authority as he rushed toward the head of the mahogany conference table. "Listen to me! This is a temporary misunderstanding! Vale Consolidated is conducting an audit, but my legal team is filing an injunction right now! We are in full control—"
"You're not in control of anything, Adrian," a crisp voice interrupted from the doorway.
The room fell dead silent.
I walked into the boardroom, wearing a tailored navy coat over a custom maternity dress, flanked by Miriam Shaw and four senior corporate attorneys from Vale Consolidated. Two uniformed security guards followed close behind, carrying heavy steel briefcase files.
The board members immediately stood up. Several of them recognized Miriam instantly, their expressions turning from anxiety to absolute horror.
"Claire?" Adrian gasped, taking a step back from the chairman's chair. "What are you doing here? This is a private corporate meeting! Security, remove her!"
"The security works for me now, Adrian," I said, taking my seat at the absolute head of the table—the seat Adrian had occupied for five years.
Miriam stepped forward and opened her ledger. "For the record, Mrs. Claire Vale Mercer holds 85% of the total voting power in Hawthorne Development through the Vale Trust. Under section four of the corporate charter, she has summoned this extraordinary meeting to deliver a vote of no confidence."
"You can't do this!" Adrian slammed his hands on the table, leaning over toward me, his eyes bloodshot. "You don't know anything about running a real estate firm! You're a housewife! You spend your days doing low-rent charity work!"
"That 'low-rent charity work' taught me how to read financial records better than you ever could," I replied smoothly, looking him straight in the eyes. "Because while you were spending two hundred thousand dollars of corporate funds on a yacht trip to Miami with Vanessa, I was reviewing the secondary ledger."
I signaled Miriam, who distributed bound black folders to every board member at the table.
"Page three," I instructed the room. "You will see evidence of systematic wire fraud, tax evasion, and unauthorized asset transfers initiated by Adrian Hawthorne over the past eighteen months. He didn't just mismanage this company; he looted it to hide his personal debts."
The room erupted into furious shouting. Senior board members glared at Adrian with pure venom.
"Adrian, is this true?!" the lead investor barked, slamming his folder shut. "You used company reserves to cover your personal gambling debts in Macau?!"
Adrian panicked, trembling violently as he backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window. "No! It's a setup! She altered the documents! She's doing this because I asked for a divorce!"
"The forensic audit was completed by an independent federal firm, Adrian," Miriam noted coldly. "The Securities and Exchange Commission and the FBI have already been served copies of these files."
As if on cue, the boardroom doors swung open again. Two federal agents in suits stepped into the room, accompanied by two local police officers.
"Adrian Hawthorne?" the lead agent announced, stepping forward with pair of silver handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, bank fraud, and corporate embezzlement."
The entire room went dead silent as the steel handcuffs clicked around Adrian's wrists. He didn't fight. His knees buckled, and he collapsed back against the glass wall, weeping openly as the agents hoisted him back to his feet.
He looked at me, his eyes pleading for a shred of mercy. "Claire... please... don't let them take me... think of our baby..."
I leaned forward, resting my hands comfortably on the mahogany table. "Our baby will bear the surname Vale, Adrian. He will never know the coward who left his mother in the rain."

As the agents dragged him out past the stunned board members, I turned back to the remaining executives.
"Now," I said, opening my tablet. "Let's discuss rebuilding this company under new leadership."
