Zero nine

Chapter 8 - The Furnace

The basement was filled with a thick, haze of chemical smoke. The air tasted of copper and burning plastic.

I rounded the corner near the wine racks, staying low against the cold blue slate floor to avoid the rising toxic fumes. Through the doorway of the open SCIF vault, I could see bright emergency halogen lights flickering against the stone walls.

"Faster! We only have four minutes before the delayed detonators trigger!" Richard’s voice shouted from inside the vault. He sounded unhinged, his voice cracking with a high-pitched, desperate rage. "Wipe the physical platters! I want every paper document reduced to ash!"

"Sir, the state police sirens are already audible on the ridge," a private contractor’s voice replied. "We need to extract now!"

"Not until the vault is destroyed!" Richard screamed.

I stepped into the doorway of the vault, raising my weapon and locking the front sight directly onto the center mass of the armed contractor standing near the steel safe.

"Drop the detonator!" I roared, my command tearing through the tight, enclosed space.

The contractor turned instantly, raising an automatic carbine.

THWACK.

I fired a single, precise shot. The bullet struck his shoulder, knocking him backward against the steel filing cabinets. His weapon clattered to the floor as he collapsed, groaning in agony.

Richard spun around, his suit jacket covered in ash, a chemical flare burning white-hot in his right hand. Beside him, mounted on the main server rack, was a heavy thermite charge wrapped in electrical tape, its digital timer ticking down from forty-five seconds.

"Evelyn," Richard whispered, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and completely devoid of sanity. "You just couldn't stay away, could you? You had to come back and ruin everything!"

"It's over, Richard," I said, my firearm locked steadily onto his chest. "Put the flare down and step away from the charge."

"Over?" Richard laughed—a cold, terrifying sound that rattled off the steel walls. "Nothing is over! This family belongs to me! The Monroe name belongs to me! Arthur gave it to me, and you took it from my hands!"

"Grandfather didn't give you anything!" I yelled over the hiss of the burning flare. "You took it by terrorizing your wife, manipulating your son, and destroying every human being who trusted you! Look at yourself, Richard! You're standing in a hole in the ground holding a road flare like a common criminal!"

"Thirty seconds, Evelyn!" Richard screamed, stepping closer to the thermite charge, pointing the burning white flame toward the fuse. "You want the truth?! You want the family legacy?! Then burn with it!"

He lunged forward to ignite the thermite.

I didn't hesitate. I didn't think about the ten years of distance, or the childhood memories, or the proud family portrait hanging in the entrance hall.

I pulled the trigger.

The bullet struck Richard in the chest. The force of the impact drove him backward, his hand opening as the burning flare dropped to the stone floor, bouncing harmlessly away from the thermite fuse.

Richard fell against the steel vault door, sliding down until he sat heavily on the floor, clutching his chest as blood pooled red and hot across his crisp white shirt.

I rushed forward, kicked the flare into a bucket of sand near the door, and smashed the digital timer on the thermite charge with the butt of my sidearm, disabling the internal circuit before it could trigger.

The room fell into an eerie, suffocating silence, broken only by the heavy, ragged gasps of the man dying at my feet.
