Chapter 6 - The Counterstrike

The morning sun over Washington, D.C. brought no warmth, only a cold, stark glare that illuminated the frantic activity inside the offices of the Department of Justice. By 0800 hours, the news had already broken across major media outlets: Monroe Strategic Holdings Under Federal Investigation.
I sat in the secure conference room on the fifth floor of the DOJ building, staring at three separate computer monitors displaying corporate structure charts, encrypted bank transfers, and intercepted emails. Thomas Whitmore sat next to me, nursing a fresh mug of black coffee, while Marcus Vance paced behind us, his tablet buzzing relentlessly with calls from press secretaries and defense attorneys.
"Richard didn't resign," Vance said, halting his pacing to tap the glass wall. "At midnight, his legal counsel filed an emergency injunction in federal court to freeze the Monroe Family Trust, seal the documents retrieved from Oakridge Manor, and challenge your military security clearance."
I didn't lift my eyes from the file in front of me. "What's his legal angle?"
"Mental incompetence on Arthur’s part, combined with an allegation that you and Whitmore used your military authority to coerce an elderly man into altering his state directives," Vance replied with a scoff. "It's a Hail Mary, Evelyn, but it's loud. He's trying to control the public narrative before the grand jury convenes."
"He's not just trying to control the narrative, Marcus," Whitmore interjected, his voice low and heavy. "He's buying time. Look at the financial flows from the Dubai accounts over the last twelve hours."
Whitmore pointed to the center monitor. Red lines pulsed across a map of Western Europe and the Middle East. Over forty million dollars had been moved out of Monroe Strategic Holdings' secondary accounts within six hours of our confrontation at the Metropolitan Club.
"He's liquidating his shadow assets," I said, feeling a familiar cold clarity settle over me. "He knows the federal charges are coming. He's preparing to jump ship."
Before Vance could respond, my cell phone vibrated against the wooden table. The caller ID displayed an unlisted number from Loudoun County, Virginia.
I answered, placing the call on speaker. "Colonel Monroe."
"Evelyn... please..."
The voice on the other end was faint, distorted by static and gasping breath. It was my mother, Eleanor.
"Mother?" I stood up instantly, my heart slamming against my ribs. "Where are you? What's happening?"
"He took... he took Julian to the estate," she sobbed, her composure entirely shattered. "Richard found out about the secondary ledger in the library safe. He’s destroying everything, Evelyn. Julian tried to stop him—he tried to say it was over—and Richard... oh God, Evelyn, Richard hit him. He’s locked in the study, and Richard has men with him... men with weapons..."
The line went dead with a harsh crackle of static.
"Mother! Eleanor!" I shouted into the phone, but there was only dial tone.
Vance immediately picked up his landline to call the FBI field office, but I was already grabbing my jacket.
"Evelyn, wait!" Whitmore called out, standing up to block my path. "You can't go up there alone. Federal marshals are twenty minutes away from executing the search warrants. Let the tactical teams handle it!"

"My brother is in that house, Thomas," I said, staring directly into his eyes with the unyielding authority of a trauma surgeon on a battlefield. "Julian is an idiot, but he's my brother. And my father has officially lost his mind. I'm not waiting twenty minutes for a SWAT stack while Richard destroys what's left of my family."
I didn't wait for his permission. I sprinted down the corridor, the heavy doors swinging shut behind me.
