Chapter 14 - The Wire Cut

The tarmac felt dead silent despite the roar of the jet engines. Rain lashed against my face as I stared at my mother—the woman who had carried me, raised me, and who was now holding a trigger to the lives of forty wounded soldiers at Oakridge Manor.
"You wouldn't," I whispered. "Julian is at the estate right now."
Eleanor’s expression didn't soften by a fraction of an inch. "Julian chose his side when he took your money, Evelyn. He made his choice. Now make yours. Ordering your MPs to stand down, let my aircraft depart, and the code will never be transmitted."
My heart pounded against my ribs like a sledgehammer, but my mind remained ice-cold—the same surgical focus that took over when a patient’s heart stopped on an operating table in Kandahar.
I reached for my chest radio, my fingers steady. "Major Vance, hold your position."
Eleanor smiled, triumph gleaming in her blue eyes. "A sensible decision, Brigadier."
I unclipped the radio and raised it to my lips. "Julian, execute Protocol Zero now."
Eleanor’s smile vanished instantly. "What?"
Over the radio speaker, Julian’s voice came through crystal clear, devoid of the hesitation he had carried for decades: "Protocol Zero executed, Evelyn. Federal signal-jamming units are active across the entire Loudoun County grid. The bomb squad has neutralized the remote receivers at the estate. The house is completely secure."
Gideon Vance’s eyes widened in panic. He aggressively pressed the button on the remote detonator once, twice, three times.
Nothing happened.
"Did you really think I didn't learn from Richard's mistakes, Mother?" I said, stepping forward until I was standing inches from her umbrella. "Grandfather taught me three things before I was ten. You forgot the second one: How to sit quietly beside someone who was dying."
I looked past her to Gideon Vance. "Drop the detonator and put your hands on your head, Mr. Vance. You are surrounded by three sniper teams from the Army Special Operations Command positioned on the hangar roofs."
Red laser dots suddenly appeared on Gideon Vance’s chest and forehead.
Gideon froze, his eyes darting to the roofs of the surrounding airport buildings. Slowly, deliberately, he opened his hand, letting the remote detonator fall onto the wet asphalt, and raised his hands into the air.
Eleanor stared at the detonator lying in the puddle at her feet. For the first time in her life, the absolute control she had cultivated from the shadows collapsed.
"You... you trapped me," she stammered, her voice losing its icy composure, cracking into a desperate, high-pitched pitch. "I am your mother, Evelyn! I gave you life!"
"You gave me a name, Eleanor," I said softly, my voice filled with an unbearable sorrow for the family that could have been. "My grandfather gave me a purpose. And my soldiers gave me a family."
I turned to the MP officers standing behind me. "Take her into custody. Charge her with high treason, theft of government property, and attempted mass murder."
Two female MP officers stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from their tactical belts.
As the cold metal clicked around my mother’s wrists, she looked at me with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred—the exact same look my father had given me at the Metropolitan Club.

"You will burn in hell for this, Evelyn!" she screamed as she was pulled toward the rear of an armored transport vehicle. "You are just like your father! You destroy everything you touch!"
I stood alone in the freezing rain on the airport tarmac, watching the doors of the transport vehicle slam shut, locking the last ghost of the Monroe legacy behind thick steel bars.
