Zero nine

Chapter 8 - Checkmate on Wall Street

Z

The sound of boots crunching over shattered glass echoed down the long marble hallway of the dark mansion.

Panic threatened to choke me, but the maternal instinct that had sustained me through five years of Eric’s emotional abuse suddenly erupted into pure adrenaline. I dropped the phone, turned on my heel, and sprinted through the dark, crimson-lit corridors back toward the guest wing.

"Beth!" I screamed in a harsh, desperate whisper as I burst into the bedroom.

Beth scrambled off the bed, her face pale with terror under the blinking red emergency lights. "Hannah! What's happening?! The lights went out!"

"They're inside the house!" I rasped, grabbing Poppy from her crib. Poppy stirred, crying out in alarm as I yanked her against my chest. "We have to get to the panic room! Now!"

"Where is it?!" Beth panicked, grabbing her shoes.

"Behind the library bookshelf!" I remembered Luke showing me the reinforced steel door during my first tour of the house.

We sprinted out into the hallway, but as we reached the top of the grand staircase, heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs from the opposite side. Flashlight beams cut through the darkness, sweeping across the walls.

"In here!" a harsh, foreign voice barked from the floor below. "Find the woman and the kid! Vance wants them alive for leverage!"

My heart hammered against my ribs like a jackhammer. We couldn't reach the library downstairs—the main hall was already crawling with mercenaries.

"The master suite," I whispered to Beth, grabbing her wrist. "Move!"

We ducked down a side corridor, slipping into Luke’s private master bedroom and slamming the heavy oak door shut behind us. I shoved the deadbolt into place, then dragged a heavy mahogany wardrobe across the hardwood floor, jamming it against the door handle with every ounce of strength I possessed.

"Hannah..." Beth sobbed, holding a brass floor lamp like a weapon. "What are we going to do?!"

"Shh!" I hissed, pulling Poppy tight against me, covering her little mouth with my hand gently so her whimpering wouldn't give away our location. "Poppy, baby, please be quiet for mommy... please, my angel..."

Outside the door, heavy footsteps stopped. A flashlight beam flickered beneath the crack of the bedroom door.

"In here!" a voice shouted. The door handle rattled violently. "It's locked! Clear the door!"

BANG!

The heavy wood shuddered as a tactical boot slammed against the door. The mahogany wardrobe creaked, holding the lock in place, but another heavy kick splintered the frame.

"They're breaking in!" Beth shrieked.

BANG!

The wood split down the middle. A gloved hand reached through the splintered gap, searching for the deadbolt handle.

I grabbed a heavy steel fireplace poker standing near the hearth, raising it above my head with trembling, fierce determination. If anyone stepped through that door to touch my child, I was going to kill them.

Suddenly, the roaring sound of a high-powered engine shattered the night outside.

Headlights cut through the master bedroom windows as a black armored SUV burst through the glass French doors of the ground-floor terrace directly below us. Tires screeched across marble floorboards inside the mansion, followed by the thunderous sound of tactical flashbang grenades detonating in the foyer.

BOOM! BOOM!

Blinding light and ear-splitting concussive blasts shook the entire estate. Shouting erupted in the hallway outside our door, followed by the sharp, rhythmic crack of suppressed automatic gunfire.

"CLEAR LEFT! SECURE THE STAIRWELL!" Commander Miller’s voice roared from the hallway.

Mercenaries screamed as Luke’s elite security force swept through the mansion like a hurricane. Within sixty seconds, the sounds of struggle subsided, replaced by the heavy thud of bodies hitting the floor and the metallic click of zip-ties being fastened around wrists.

The wardrobe jammed against our door was pulled away from the outside. The ruined door swung open.

Standing in the doorway, bathed in the red emergency light and smelling of smoke and cordite, was Luke Callahan.

His tactical vest was scuffed, his face covered in soot, but his dark eyes burned with a furious, desperate worry. The moment he saw Beth, me, and Poppy standing by the fireplace, the fury vanished, replaced by sheer relief.

"Hannah!" Luke choked out, dropping his weapon to its sling and striding across the room in two massive strides.

He pulled me, Poppy, and Beth into an overwhelming, fierce embrace. I collapsed against his chest, dropping the fireplace poker, my entire body shaking with violent, sobbing relief.

"I've got you," Luke rasped into my hair, holding us so tightly I could feel the thumping rhythm of his racing heart against my cheek. "I've got you. You're safe. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry I wasn't here."

"You came back," I sobbed into his tactical vest, clutching his shoulders. "You came back for us."

"Always," Luke swore softly, pressing his lips firmly against my forehead. "Always."

Commander Miller stepped into the doorway, holstering his sidearm. "Mr. Callahan, all four intruders are secured. We recovered their encrypted satellite phones. They contain direct, real-time text orders from Julian Vance sent twenty minutes ago, explicitly commanding them to abduct Mrs. Dalton and her daughter."

Luke slowly pulled back from me, his face transforming into a mask of terrifying, absolute vengeance.

"They tried to hurt my family," Luke said, his voice dropping into an icy, deadly whisper that made the air in the room freeze. "Miller, contact our corporate pilots. Have the Gulfstream prepped on the tarmac at Andrews Air Force Base."

"Where are we going, sir?" Miller asked.

Luke looked down at me, taking my hand in his, his grip firm and unyielding.

"We're flying to Manhattan tonight," Luke declared, his dark eyes flashing like cold steel. "Tuesday's board meeting isn't happening. I'm ending Victoria and Julian Vance tomorrow morning."

The next morning, the sun rose over the towering skyscrapers of Wall Street, casting brilliant reflections across the glass facade of Callahan Global World Headquarters.

Inside the sprawling 50th-floor executive boardroom, Victoria Callahan and Julian Vance sat at the head of the massive glass conference table. Gathered around them were the twelve members of the Board of Directors, looking anxious and uncomfortable as they sipped espresso and reviewed the emergency packages laid out before them.

"Thank you all for arriving on such short notice," Victoria said, stepping to the head of the table with a poised, triumphant smile. She wore a crimson suit, looking like a queen about to claim her crown. "As you know, our reclusive CEO, my brother-in-law Luke, has involved this company in unprecedented public scandals over the last forty-eight hours. His unhinged behavior and erratic personal life have degraded our stock value by four percent."

Julian Vance leaned forward, placing his heavy hands on the table. "We have called this emergency vote to officially invoke Section 9 of the corporate charter—removing Lucas Callahan immediately as CEO and appointing Victoria Callahan as interim Chairwoman."

"And on what grounds, Julian?" a cold, commanding voice echoed from the heavy double doors of the boardroom.

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

The doors swung open wide.

Walking into the boardroom was Luke Callahan. He looked magnificent—wearing an $8,000 charcoal pinstripe suit, his hair perfectly combed, his aura radiating total, terrifying authority. Walking beside him was Evelyn Vance, carrying two thick leather briefcases.

And walking directly behind them... was me. I held my head high, dressed in an elegant ivory suit, carrying myself with the dignity and poise of a woman who was no longer afraid of anything in this world.

Victoria’s face drained of all color. She slammed her hands onto the table, her eyes widening in pure terror. "Luke?! What is the meaning of this?! You have no right to interrupt an executive session!"

"I am the Chief Executive Officer of this company, Victoria," Luke said smoothly, walking down the length of the table while the board members stared in shocked silence. "I have every right."

"Security!" Julian Vance screamed, his voice cracking with panic as sweat poured down his neck. "Security, escort these people out of the building!"

"The security team on this floor reports to me, Julian," Luke said softly, taking his seat at the absolute head of the table. "And they have already locked the elevators."

Evelyn Vance stepped forward, opening her briefcases and sliding thick, bound dossier folders in front of every single board member.

"Gentlemen of the board," Evelyn announced, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "Before you cast any votes, please review the evidence gathered by Federal prosecutors and our forensic accounting team overnight."

The board members opened the files, gasping as they read through the contents.

"These documents contain certified proof of Julian Vance embezzling two hundred and forty million dollars from our European defense logistics accounts over the last five years," Evelyn explained coldly. "Furthermore, they contain full audio recordings and satellite comms logs from last night, proving Julian Vance and Victoria Callahan hired armed mercenaries to breach our server facility in Reston and commit kidnapping against Hannah Dalton and her child."

"That's a lie! It's a forgery!" Julian shrieked, backing away from the table, his face turning gray.

"And finally," Luke added, leaning back in his leather chair, staring directly into Victoria’s trembling eyes, "we have the finalized forensic report from the California Highway Patrol proving that five years ago, Victoria Callahan paid three hundred thousand dollars to tamper with the braking system on my brother Marcus's car."

Victoria sank back into her chair, her body trembling violently as the room descended into utter chaos. Board members stood up, shouting in indignation, waving the evidence in the air.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open once more.

Six federal agents wearing dark suits and gold FBI badges stepped into the room, led by a stern federal prosecutor.

"Victoria Callahan, Julian Vance," the lead FBI agent announced, pulling out silver handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit murder, and armed extortion. Stand up and put your hands behind your back."

Julian Vance collapsed to his knees, sobbing openly as the agents slapped the handcuffs around his wrists. Victoria stood frozen, her regal composure completely shattered as an agent pulled her arms behind her back, fastening the steel cuffs.

As Victoria was led past Luke’s chair, she stopped, glaring at him with pure, venomous hatred. "You think you won, Luke? You destroyed everything Marcus built!"

Luke looked at her, his expression unreadable, his dark eyes colder than ice. "Marcus built this company on honor, Victoria. You built your life on blood. Goodbye."

As the federal agents dragged Victoria and Vance out of the boardroom in front of every board member and news camera waiting in the lobby, the board members turned to Luke, clapping slowly before bursting into a standing ovation.

Luke stood up, but he didn't address the board. He walked past them all, stepping up to where I stood by the door.

He took my hand in his, looking down at me with a warmth that filled my entire soul.

"It's over, Hannah," Luke whispered softly. "They're gone. It's finally over."
