Chapter 7 - Traitor at the Gate

The situation room beneath Luke’s Potomac estate felt like the command center of a military operation. Multiple high-definition monitors lined the walls, displaying encrypted code streams, security feeds from Callahan Global facilities around the world, and financial market tickers fluttering in real-time.

It was eleven o'clock at night. Poppy was fast asleep in the guest wing upstairs under Beth’s watchful eye, while I sat at the central glass conference table, watching Luke and his top security operatives prepare for a war that was no longer confined to courtrooms or press releases.

"The facility in Reston, Virginia, holds our primary offline data vault," Luke explained, pointing to a blueprint displayed on the main digital screen. "It houses the uncorrupted forensic accounting records detailing Julian Vance’s embezzlement and the wire transfers proving Victoria ordered the tampering of my brother’s vehicle five years ago."

My blood ran cold. "They hired people to physically break in and destroy it?"

"Julian Vance knows that if those files reach the Federal Grand Jury on Monday morning, he and Victoria will spend the rest of their lives in a federal supermax prison," Commander Miller said, adjusting a shoulder holster over his black tactical sweater. "They hired a rogue private military outfit out of Eastern Europe—men who operate in the shadows, off the books."

"Why not just give the files to the FBI right now?" I asked, leaning forward, my hands tightly clasped. "If you have the evidence, Luke, hand it over to the authorities!"

"Because Victoria has contacts deep inside the regional Department of Justice office," Luke replied, his jaw set in a hard, uncompromising line. "If we submit the files through standard channels before the board meeting on Tuesday, her informants will flag the filing and give her time to flee to a non-extradition country with hundreds of millions in stolen assets. I don't just want her stopped, Hannah. I want her stripped of everything. I want justice for Marcus."

He turned to Miller. "Are the strike team protocols ready?"

"Yes, sir," Miller nodded. "We have eight senior operatives deployed at the Reston facility. The moment Vance’s mercenaries attempt an entry, we will capture them on site, secure their encrypted comms, and tie them directly to Vance’s personal bank accounts."

Luke picked up his dark tactical jacket from the back of his chair. "I'm going with you."

"Luke, no!" I blurted out, standing up from my chair before I could stop myself.

Luke paused, turning to look at me. The room fell quiet as Miller and the other operatives discreetly stepped back toward the comms console.

"It's too dangerous," I said, my voice trembling as I stepped closer to him. "They're mercenaries, Luke! They aren't lawyers or PR spin doctors. They carry weapons. What if something happens to you?"

Luke looked down at me, his dark eyes softening instantly. "Hannah, I've been fighting this battle alone for five years. I built Callahan Global with my bare hands. I am not going to hide in a basement while mercenaries try to burn my brother's legacy to the ground."

"I know," I murmured, staring up at his handsome, battle-weary face. "I know how brave you are. But... Poppy and I just found safety, Luke. We just found you. I can't bear the thought of losing you to these monsters."

Luke reached out, taking my hands in his. His grip was warm, strong, and deeply grounding. "You won't lose me, Hannah. I promise you. I’m going to end this tonight, and when I come back, we are going to finish rebuilding your life."

He raised my hand to his lips, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss against my knuckles that sent a jolt of electricity straight to my heart. "Trust me."

"I trust you," I whispered. "With my life."

Ten minutes later, three dark SUVs sped out of the subterranean garage of the estate, vanishing into the damp, foggy Maryland night.

Left alone in the massive mansion, the silence felt deafening. I returned upstairs to the guest suite, checking on Poppy. She was sound asleep, cuddling her plush lamb, her tiny breathing peaceful and rhythmic. Beth was sitting on the edge of the bed, reading a book under the dim light of a nightstand lamp.

"Did he leave?" Beth asked softly, looking up.

"Yes," I said, sitting down in the armchair beside the crib, rubbing my tired eyes. "They went to Virginia."

"He really cares about you, Hannah," Beth said gently, setting her book down. "I saw the way he looked at you before he left. A man like Luke Callahan... he doesn't look at anyone like that unless they mean the world to him."

"It's all happening so fast, Beth," I admitted, staring out the window at the fog rolling across the estate grounds. "Forty-eight hours ago, I was sitting on a plane, broken, broke, and terrified of my own shadow. Now I'm sitting in a fortress, involved in a high-stakes corporate war."

"Sometimes the universe tears your old life down so fast that you don't have time to be scared of the new one," Beth said wisely. "You deserve a real man, Hannah. Not a selfish, narcissistic coward like Eric. Luke is a protector."

I nodded slowly, wanting to believe her with every fiber of my being.

Hours passed like dripping molasses. Midnight came and went. Then one o'clock. Then two o'clock.

I couldn't sleep. I paced the floor of the guest room, checking my phone every three minutes for a message from Luke. Nothing. The silence from Virginia was agonizing.

At 2:45 AM, the soft chime of the estate’s internal intercom chimed.

"Mrs. Dalton?" a security voice spoke from the wall speaker. "We have an urgent incoming transmission for you in the primary study. It's Commander Miller."

My heart leaped into my throat. I bolted out of the room, running down the carpeted hallway and down the grand staircase into the library. I snatched up the desk phone.

"Miller?!" I gasped into the receiver. "Is Luke okay?! What happened?!"

"Mrs. Dalton," Miller’s voice came through, heavy with static and breathing heavily. "The Reston facility was secured. We intercepted Vance’s team before they could breach the server vault. We have all six mercenaries in custody, along with their encrypted radios containing direct voice orders from Julian Vance."

I let out a massive sob of relief. "Oh thank God! Is Luke alright?!"

There was a long, harrowing pause on the line.

"Miller?" I pressed, panic instantly surging back into my chest. "Miller, answer me! Where is Luke?!"

"Mr. Callahan was not injured during the raid, Mrs. Dalton," Miller said, his tone dropping into a dark, grim register. "But while we were securing the Virginia vault... Julian Vance and Victoria Callahan realized the raid had failed. They executed a secondary plan."

"What secondary plan?!" I shrieked.

"They didn't just want the data destroyed, Hannah," Miller said softly. "They knew Luke was at the Virginia facility. While he was away... a second team was dispatched to the Potomac estate. They bypassed the perimeter sensors ten minutes ago."

My blood turned to pure ice. The phone slipped slightly in my trembling hand.

"They aren't after the company anymore, Hannah," Miller warned, his voice echoing with desperate urgency. "They know Luke’s sole vulnerability is you and Poppy. They are inside the mansion. Get your daughter and lock yourselves in the panic room right now!"

Before I could even scream, the lights inside the library went pitch black. The emergency backup red lights flashed on, casting a eerie, terrifying crimson glow across the room, followed by the deafening sound of shattering glass from the main foyer.
