Chapter 6 - Traitor at the Gate

Z
"He's doing what?!" I gasped, standing up so fast my head spun. Panic spiked through my veins again, sharp and blinding. "He has a restraining order against him! Judge Hayes explicitly ordered him to stay five hundred yards away from me and Poppy!"
"He's exploiting a legal loophole," Commander Miller explained calmly, tapping the screen on his tablet to show the live video feed. "Dalton isn't standing on the estate property. He’s standing on the public shoulder of the road, exactly five hundred and ten yards from the main residence. He brought the local police department with him under the guise of requesting a 'civil welfare check' on his child, claiming he received an anonymous tip that Poppy was in immediate danger."
Luke took the tablet from Miller, studying the live video stream. On the screen, Eric was weeping theatrically in front of a rolling news camera, pointing wildly at the iron gates of Luke's estate while his attorney, Richard Sterling, spoke heatedly to two uniformed county police officers.
"He wants a spectacle," Luke said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "He wants me to send security out there to force him off the road. If my team lays a hand on him or the press, the headline tomorrow will be 'Billionaire Defense Titan Uses Armed Guards to Silence Devastated Father.'"
"What do we do?" I asked, my voice trembling as I gathered Poppy up into my arms. She buried her face into my neck, sensing the sudden shift in atmosphere. "Luke, we can't let him do this! The police are there!"
"The police are just doing their job, Hannah," Luke said, handing the tablet back to Miller. "They received a domestic welfare call. They are legally obligated to verify that Poppy is safe. If we refuse to let the officers see the child, they will obtain an emergency court order to enter the premises, which will give Eric the exact media circus he’s praying for."
"Then let the officers in," Beth suggested, stepping out from the terrace doors behind us, having heard the commotion. "Let the police see that Poppy is fine, and then make them arrest Eric for violating the spirit of the restraining order!"
"No," Luke countered, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the situation like a grandmaster on a chessboard. "If we let the police through the gate, Eric’s camera crew will shoot telephoto footage of uniformed officers entering my property. The tabloids will spin it as a police raid on my estate."
He looked at me, his gaze fierce and determined. "We don't hide behind iron gates, Hannah. We control the narrative."
"How?" I asked.
"You and I are going down to the gate together," Luke declared smoothly. "With Poppy."
Beth gasped. "Are you insane, Luke?! Eric is waiting for her out there with cameras!"
"Exactly," Luke said, a cold, brilliant smile appearing on his face. "He’s waiting for a victim. He’s waiting for a terrified woman hiding behind a billionaire’s security team. He is not expecting a mother to walk out of those gates with absolute confidence, accompanied by her legal counsel and local authorities, to publicly put him in his place."
He turned to Commander Miller. "Miller, call Sheriff Davis directly. Tell him I am walking to the gate voluntarily to allow his officers to perform their welfare check. Tell him to bring his body-worn camera. And make sure our own legal media team streams every single second of the interaction live to our corporate press network."
Ten minutes later, the massive iron gates of the Potomac estate swung open slowly, casting a dramatic shadow across the pavement.
Eric, who had been shouting into a microphone held by a blonde tabloid reporter, froze as he saw us step through the threshold.
I walked at the front, wearing my navy dress, holding Poppy comfortably in my arms. Beside me walked Luke Callahan, calm, imposing, and completely unbothered by the sudden barrage of flashing cameras and shouted questions from the news crew. Trailing just behind us were Evelyn Vance and Commander Miller.
Two uniformed county police officers stepped forward, looking thoroughly uncomfortable with the media circus Eric had created.
"Mrs. Dalton? Mr. Callahan?" the lead officer said, touching the brim of his hat. "I'm Sergeant Vance. We received a welfare request regarding the minor child, Poppy Dalton."
"Good afternoon, Sergeant Vance," I said, my voice steady, clear, and loud enough for every microphone in the crowd to pick up. "As you can see, my daughter is completely safe, healthy, and happy."
Poppy looked at the officer, holding her favorite stuffed lamb, and gave a little wave. "Hi!" she chirped softly.
Sergeant Vance smiled, a visible wave of relief washing over his face. He checked his body camera light. "Thank you, ma'am. She clearly appears to be in excellent condition."
"Sergeant!" Richard Sterling interjected loudly, stepping into the camera frame with an exaggerated, indignant posture. "My client, Eric Dalton, received a frantic tip that his daughter was being held against her will in an isolated compound owned by an indicted executive! We demand an immediate custody transfer!"
Evelyn Vance stepped forward smoothly, pulling a crisp set of legal papers from her briefcase.
"Sergeant Vance," Evelyn said, her voice ringing out like a gavel. "I am Evelyn Vance, counsel for Mrs. Dalton. I hand you a certified, sealed copy of the order issued three hours ago by Judge Margaret Hayes of the Anne Arundel Circuit Court."
The sergeant took the papers, scanning them quickly.
"As you can see," Evelyn continued loudly, turning so her voice carried directly to the rolling news cameras, "Judge Hayes dismissed Mr. Dalton's fraudulent claims with prejudice, issued a five-hundred-yard temporary restraining order against him for malicious prosecution, and noted that Mr. Dalton is currently under federal investigation for wire fraud and accepting bribes to fabricate public scandals."
The blonde news reporter’s mouth dropped open. She immediately signaled her cameraman to zoom in on Eric’s face.
"What?!" Eric yelled, his face turning bright red as he realized the media narrative was crumbling in real-time. "That's a lie! She's lying! Hannah is being manipulated by Callahan!"
"Eric," I said, stepping forward, looking him directly in the eyes for the first time in three weeks. I didn't feel fear anymore. I didn't feel small. I felt an incredible, surging wave of maternal strength. "Stop it."
Eric blinked, startled by the sheer authority in my voice.
"You took our savings," I said, my voice cold, steady, and devastatingly clear for the rolling cameras. "You locked your daughter and me out of our home. You sold fake stories to the press for fifty thousand dollars because you couldn't stand the fact that I survived without you. You don't care about Poppy. You never did. You only care about yourself."
"Hannah, shut up!" Eric spat, stepping toward me instinctively.
"Back up, Mr. Dalton!" Sergeant Vance commanded instantly, placing his hand on his taser holster. "Step back right now!"
Luke stepped subtly in front of me, his massive frame shielding Poppy and me from Eric. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't make a threat. He simply looked down at Eric with an icy, terrifying intensity that made the smaller man visibly flinch.
"Sergeant Vance," Luke said smoothly to the officer. "Mr. Dalton is currently standing five hundred and ten yards from my home, but he is currently harassing my guests in full view of law enforcement. I suggest you advise him to leave before my legal team files an immediate motion for violation of a judicial protection order."
Sergeant Vance turned on Eric, his patience entirely exhausted. "Mr. Dalton, Mr. Sterling, you are done here. Turn around, get in your vehicle, and leave this property immediately, or I will arrest both of you for disturbing the peace and obstruction."
Richard Sterling grabbed Eric’s arm, his face pale as he looked at the news cameras capturing every second of their public humiliation. "Eric, we're leaving. Now!"
"This isn't over, Hannah!" Eric screamed as his lawyer dragged him back toward their rental sedan. "You hear me?! This isn't over!"
As their car sped away down the winding road, the news reporters swarmed forward, shouting questions at Luke and me.
"Mr. Callahan! Is it true that Apex PR paid Mr. Dalton to frame you?!"
"Mrs. Dalton! Will you be pressing criminal charges against your ex-husband?!"
Luke didn't answer them. He placed a protective arm around my waist, guiding Poppy and me back through the massive iron gates. As the heavy doors shut behind us, cutting off the flashes and noise of the outside world, the silence of the estate returned.
I let out a long, shuddering breath, my knees suddenly feeling weak. Luke’s arm around my waist tightened slightly, supporting my weight before I could stumble.
"You were incredible out there, Hannah," Luke said, looking down at me with profound admiration in his eyes. "You didn't just defend yourself. You destroyed his entire narrative in front of every news camera in Maryland."
I looked up at him, my heart pounding in my chest—not from fear, but from the sudden, overwhelming realization of how close Luke and I had become in less than forty-eight hours.
"We did it together," I whispered.
"Yes, we did," Luke agreed softly, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face.
But as our eyes met, Commander Miller came marching down the driveway toward us, his face grimmer than ever.
"Mr. Callahan," Miller said, his tone urgent. "We just intercepted an encrypted communication from Julian Vance’s office in Manhattan. They know the gate stunt failed."
Luke’s eyes hardened, the moment of quiet intimacy vanishing in an instant. "What are they doing next, Miller?"
May you like
"They aren't going after Mrs. Dalton in court anymore, sir," Miller reported quietly. "They’re staging a hostile corporate takeover at Tuesday's board meeting... and they've just hired an independent security firm to execute a physical breach of our server facility in Virginia tonight to destroy the audit files proving Marcus was murdered."
