Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

The ocean air carried a crisp, invigorating chill as autumn settled over Del Mar. Life had established a serene, predictable rhythm. Apex Global was thriving under my direct leadership, and Liam was growing into a bright, energetic toddler who filled every corner of our Spanish villa with laughter. But in the high-stakes world of corporate finance, power vacuums never stay empty for long, and old debts have a sinister way of resurfacing.
It began on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. I was reviewing the quarterly logistics reports in my top-floor office at Salgado Tower when my executive assistant, Sarah, walked in with a look of visible hesitation.
"Nora, there's a gentleman from the State Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network downstairs," Sarah said softly, placing a plain black folder on my desk. "He insisted on delivering this document to you personally."
I opened the folder. Inside was a legal summons regarding a joint federal investigation into offshore accounts linked to Vance Logistics. My heart did a sudden, familiar tightening, but I quickly calmed myself. I had already turned over every document, every scrap of paper my legal team had uncovered during the divorce and corporate audit.
"Did he specify what this is about?" I asked, looking up at Sarah. "We settled all federal claims months ago."
"He said it’s not about Brandon’s past activities," Sarah replied, lowering her voice. "It’s about his father."
I froze. Richard Vance, Brandon’s father, had passed away nearly seven years ago, leaving Vance Logistics to his son. During my marriage, Brandon had always spoken of his father as a legendary self-made entrepreneur who had built the family empire from scratch.
Ten minutes later, Special Agent Marcus Thorne sat across from me in my office. He was a stern, middle-aged man with sharp gray eyes and a demeanor that suggested he had seen the absolute worst of human nature.
"Mrs. Salgado," Agent Thorne began, placing a tablet on the table between us. "When your legal team dismantled Vance Logistics and Apex Global acquired its assets, you assumed you were taking over a failing regional carrier that had been gutted by your ex-husband's embezzlement."
"That is what the audit showed," I said calmly. "Brandon was siphoning funds into shell companies to bankrupt the business."
"Brandon was an amateur," Agent Thorne said bluntly, tapping the tablet screen to display a complex web of international bank transfers dating back fifteen years. "What Brandon didn't realize—and what your forensic team missed—is that Vance Logistics was originally built as a front company for an international private equity syndicate known as The Vance Group, operating out of Zurich and Luxembourg."
I stared at the screen. The dates on the initial offshore transfers predated my marriage to Brandon. In fact, they coincided with the exact period when my late father, Arthur Salgado, was finalizing Apex Global's original logistics partnership with Richard Vance.
"Richard Vance didn't build that company on his own," Agent Thorne revealed, leaning forward. "He built it using stolen collateral tied to your father's estate. When your father passed away and placed your controlling shares into a legal trust, Richard Vance realized that the moment you inherited those voting rights, Apex Global would inevitably trigger an automatic audit of Vance Logistics."
The room seemed to spin slightly. The horrific realization hit me like a physical blow.
"Brandon’s marriage to me..." I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "It wasn't just his mother's idea to control my inheritance."
"It was a multi-generational strategy," Agent Thorne confirmed cold-bloodedly. "Richard Vance instructed his son to marry you years ago to ensure that the Salgado inheritance would be permanently integrated into the Vance corporate structure. When you became pregnant, the urgency escalated. They needed an heir to lock down the trust conditions permanently, after which you were to be quietly discarded."
I leaned back in my leather chair, my hand instinctively clutching the silver pen my father had given me before he died. All those years of marriage... every romantic weekend, every soft promise, every smile from Brandon—it had all been a meticulously scripted corporate acquisition planned long before I ever met him.
"Why are you telling me this now, Agent Thorne?" I asked, my voice dangerously steady. "Brandon is in federal prison. Victoria is incapacitated. Vance Logistics no longer exists."
Agent Thorne brought up a final profile on his tablet. The screen displayed the image of an elderly, sharply dressed man with silver hair and piercing eyes.
"Because Richard Vance didn't die seven years ago," Agent Thorne said. "He faked his death in a private plane crash off the coast of Mexico, transferred eighty million dollars into European accounts, and left his son to play the sacrificial lamb. And three days ago, Richard Vance's legal representatives filed a formal motion in a European arbitration court claiming ownership of thirty percent of Apex Global's core assets."
I looked at the image of the man who had orchestrated the nightmare of my life from the shadows. The fury that rose in my chest was unlike anything I had felt during Brandon's trial. Brandon was a weak, selfish puppet. This was the puppet master.
"He wants his empire back," I said softly.
"He wants your father's legacy, Mrs. Salgado," Agent Thorne corrected me. "And he is using European maritime law to execute a hostile takeover."
I stood up slowly, staring out the window at the blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean. "Agent Thorne, tell your directors at FinCEN that they don't need to hunt Richard Vance down in Europe."
May you like
Thorne raised an eyebrow. "And why is that?"
"Because," I said, turning back to him with absolute steel in my eyes, "I am going to bring him out into the open myself."
